Cast touring worth it for 2nd set of skis?

I currently have one pair of skis mounted with pivot 15s. Been looking at getting a second pair of skis but not sure I can/want to swing the amount it costs for another set of pivots. I also have been wanting to get into touring and backcountry. I guess my question is would it be worth it to simply get an upgrade kit and a 2nd ski kit, have my existing pivots re-mounted on that and just have the one pair to switch between skis and also use for touring? If that makes any sense

You’d still need 2 sets of pivots, cause the heels don’t swap out like the toes do. Unless you are planning on using quiver killers on the heels

keep in mind you still need a second set of heel pieces for your second ski. if you have a pair, run it. if not you could potentially save a little dough as you can buy a slightly cheaper pair of pivots (12 or 14s) for the heel pieces, and still use the metal toe. That is, if you have a shop that's willing to mix bindings or even do a cast mount.

it takes a little bit more finesse to mount casts properly and get the posts positioned perfectly. most shops should be able to learn it quickly unless they have a rotating cast of high schoolers mounting skis.

If you wanted to do it with just 1 pair of pivots you could buy a second set of brakes for the other ski and swap the dildo back and forth between baseplates

I'd try to find some old 12's or 14's to use as the heel if you want to do it cheap and not swap over every time.

how long have you used quiver killers for? how much use/how many total swaps do you think the skis have seen? how have they held up over time?

3rd season. Two inserts came out of my moments, and those were the only ones that were mounted by a shop. Probably 5 swaps a season. Maybe 20 total. If you plan on swapping them weekly, I wouldn't do it.

I think they really shine for an extra rock ski touring setup and if you want to replace parts on pivots without a remount.

I think it's like $80 for inserts and screws for cast. Mount them with a strong epoxy, wood glue doesn't work.

It’s partly an insurance/liability thing. Most lawyers and insurance guys for ski shops have never heard of cast so it makes them squeemish. It’s also somewhat of a pain to disassemble and reassemble an entire toe piece, and drill extra holes (with a sticker as a guide) just to put a brake lock on. It’s a way more time consuming mount with potentially extra liability that you charge the same as a regular mount, so for a lot of shops it’s just not worth it.

I'm a big advocate for cast, it’s a great product, but i get why a lot of shops avoid it.

Agreed, I think I would feel comfortable with quiver killers on lighter touring setups. I don't know if I'd dance with em for park skiing or certain inbounds skis. I'm curious to try them once I find two suitable sets of skis.

I have 100+ days of them in bounds and prlly 10 park days. Tas long as you loctite them they're fine

IMO the purpose of CAST is to allow you to have one ski to do it all. I currently have my CAST setup mounted on my K2 Marksmans. I can go touring in the morning and rip park laps in the afternoon. I guess my question is what skis do you currently own and what do you do most with them? If your current skis would make even a halfway decent touring ski and they aren’t beat to shit then I don’t see a purpose in buying a second pair of skis, bindings, and the second ski kit from cast.
