How do you like to watch skiing these days?
Ski media has changed a lot in the past 20 years! Used to be, you were either dropping a 4 minute edit for NS, or working on your part in a 40 minute film. Now, a "project" can be a lot of different things. I think I've got the main ones down here:
-Full length film. The classic. 30 minutes to an hour. Usually a concretized theme, but mostly just highlight reel mixed with a little travel montage and exposé on tHaT fEeLiNg LiKe nO oThEr.
-Independent/Solo film. I think these really started showing up around the Candide Kamera era. 10-20 minutes, usually a single skier, or a single trip/mission. The hook is usually a narrative intro, or an old dude talking about doing whatever you want. Skier might say something idk.
-Short film. More meat than an edit, but basically an edit. 5-8 minutes, dad cam with the zoom lens, pretty raw. A lot of these seem to substitute angsty, random b roll for any sort of plot progression
-Edit. The NS classic. One song, max 30 seconds of b roll, and 3 minutes of highlight reel tricks. Probably filmed on a pole-mounted gopro, or horizontal phone clips.
-Reel edit. For the kids that don't understand how the algorithm works. one full minute of vertical phone clips on the gram, slapped on top of some music. Probably Carti.
-Clip. One Take Jake. Maybe 2 shots if someone got a second angle.
-TikTok. More likely a video about skiing than a video of skiing. Audio ripped from a fever dream, and you won't stop hearing it for days.
I watch edits and insta clips the most tbh but that’s cuz I’ll be like oh I don’t have time for a movie but then I’ll spend at least a half hr watching shittier content
edit: not saying all edits are shitty but I’d rather watch an actual movie

Urban- full length
Full length but greasy like you described the short film
I personally think an hour is too long for any ski vids. Imo anything around 2-5 mins is perfect for the average video and longer than that up to like 30ish mins im down to watch if its actual sick shit that keeps me engaged. The only thing thats worse than a 40 min film with 3 min segments the same b roll thats in every other ski film is ig clips with songs but the video I just posted on ig is kinda wack ngl so im not really aloud to shit on ig skiers anymore. Its like a legit edit thats also on ig and I don’t fw that I ended up creating the worst of all of these things.
The coolest format (to me) is definitely the short film like 20-30ish mins.
Nimbus films/Pollard films
Laurent de Martin movies
Elles w/ Arthur Longo
August light ( a little long for this category but I'll include)
It's enough time to show life around skiing, which is actually most of the time we spend 'skiing'. It also allows time for good cinematography and some narrative development.
~1hr is often boring and drawn out. Too many similar shots for me. Unless of course the narrative or premise is super novel and dope.
2nd best is 8 minute film. All same reasons the short film is sweet but focused on an individual. Think Dylan Siggers or Sammy C edits.
All times are Eastern (-4)
