Catching an edge on boxes?

Hi friends,

Today I was successfully sliding all of the boxes at the small park and decided to head over to the bigger features. I was doing well so I decided to try an elevated box feature. I landed successfully but about halfway through the feature, the inner edge of my back ski caught and I flailed forward into oblivion. No injuries but I am curious what happened? I have a pair of new armada arv 96s and it was raining/snowing wet.. Do these conditions make the box stickier? I was really happy with my progress and now I am hesitant to jump on a box. I would prefer not to dull my edges if possible. Thoughts?

Edit: I was sliding sideways not 50-50

It’s hard to learn (I’m learning too) but I think you have to keep those edges up slightly, and make sure your detune is legit. Boxes have more sliding surface than rails so you’re more likely to catch on a slide. Something that helps me is skiing without poles so I can catch myself with my arms easier if I fall.

By “edge” I mean front edge, and by “detune” I mean file your new ski edge so it’s dull and won’t catch as easy

Don't be a retard and you won't catch an edge. Simple as straight up every dude I've seen catch edge is a retard.

But hey if you want a serious tip just take an angle grinder to the edge of your skis, don't worry they'll be sparking but just get in there good, way quicker then using a file.

These replies are garbage.

Anyways, you’re probably catching an edge because your skis are new and have sharper edges which can be really grabby on rails, especially when wet. Most people do what’s called detuning your edges, where you file the edge down to smooth it out so it will slide rails better and catch less and will prolong the skis life overall. If you just do this underfoot you will still have decent edge control skiing and sliding rails/boxes will be way better.

What dwt802 said. But even with duller edges you might still end up sticking from time to time. Conditions change and sometimes rails get sticky. Having a wider, more balance stance with your knees bent can sometimes help.

honestly I prefer hitting down / flat rails to boxes any day. rails might look scarier but I've never had a scary wreck on rails, but on boxes I've seen my life flash before my eyes lol

tri_photoon boxes I've seen my life flash before my eyes lol

Same here. My only ski injury was on a box , earlier this season. That made me start trying tubes because they suddenly looked less scary.

Never put your own equipment on the line. Take an angle grinder to the resort and detune all the boxes and rail instead.

You probably caught on a burr in the metal coping or your edges were too sharp and dug in. I usually try and do a rail check when something like that happens, and most the time I can usually find a flap of metal sticking up where someones edge dug in, or maybe your edge was the one that dug in. I then tell park crew about it and they grind it smooth. Otherwise I agree with everyone else that metal tubes are actually safer and more consistent than boxes once you learn them.
