Americans (and maybe EU nations) are living in delusion basically telling Russia “if you invade Ukraine, you’ll be in big trouble, mister” threatening sanctions and all sorts of bullshit. But Russia has the support of China, you think they care? China has way more global power than we want to believe. Russia and Ukraine hold enormous amounts of oil (and specifically natural gas) that is supplied to European countries for energy and everybody is already screaming about high prices, wait until their energy bill triples still. US has lots of natural gas but we can’t transport it in scale. China has a stranglehold on the global supply chain as capitalism outsourced everything to China to save some bucks and make stonks go up. China’s belt and road initiative has blitzkrieg written all over it. I know this is speculation, but Russian trolls have also potentially been destabilizing united nations across the globe over the last decade too. It’s Russia and China’s world for the taking. Why are we so hellbent on going to space again? The war for natural resources is going to get a lot more brutal

we’re just left with hopes and dreams and the hope that NATO actually has any power.

I really doubt it. I don't even see it as a good move to threaten with it - not that we have seen Putin make very many good moves with this war, but I digress...



Threatening Ukraine with forward-deplayed tac-nukes, governed by Russian generals is pretty much the stupidest plan for Putin.

1. It will maintain and if anything, invigorate worldwide condemnation and response - potentially escalating sanctions to an even higher degree.

2. It will certainly spin the ire of the currently neutral PRChina - which they definitely cannot afford to do. China is effectively a corporation that sells cheap labour and stolen intellectual property, masquerading as a communist nation. The CCP sees nukes as VERY bad for business. If you get China to turn on you, then your really have nowhere to go at that point... Youre extra stuffed.

3. Putin risks the power he has over Russia's nuclear arsenal being taken out of his hands. He has all control over strategic weapons, but tactical weapons need to be forward deployed, and this means he doesnt have 100% control over its usage. The dude is a narcissistic, paranoid, control freak. He simply will not allow that to happen unless some pretty wild shit happens.

4. Putin's army can barely hold the land it controls already, and Ukraine has delivered very effective counter attacks - destroying or seizing a ton of Russian equipment... If he has nukes forward deployed and Ukraine can seize them and control them after a counterattack, then Putin risks a nuclear exchange with Ukraine itself... and he's downright fucked at that stage.

By the way.. on that last point... so much Russian equipment has been destroyed or seized by Ukraine that they're being forced to bust out shit that's been rusting since the 1960s... rockets that are failing to ignite... AK's that have been rusted solid by sitting in a leaking soviet weapons dump for 45 years...

Their morale is so low.. There is dissent and a complete lack of discipline in the ranks, and this call-up of 300k reservists is a complete waste of time - thousands of them have fled to Georgia or Armenia or Turkey, etc...

The conditions that they have to bear are no better than the Russian prisons they are being threatened with for dissent.

They're being told they will be reprimanded for bringing smartphones with them, but they all have smartphones, and are taking photos and making posts with their geotags on... posting photos to social media and shit, and accidentally telling Ukrainian defenders exactly where their positions are and what equipment they have with them.

This whole thing would be hilarious if people weren't getting fucking killed...



For years we have been hearing 'dont invade Russia in the winter' well, with the condition and state of Russia's equipment in this war, and the fact that Ukraine has been getting pumped full of fresh western equipment by the day, and is fighting for it's own existence... there's virtually no way that the Russians are going to win this thing. Putin is just throwing men at the problem and hoping that works like Russia seems to always do...



All we can hope is Putin eventually gets hauled off to the Urals to be shot and bayoneted to death Romanov style...

Putin will not nuke ukraine (please tell me this ages well)

My best guess is his gameplan is to let Ukraine win - sorta, but push for the right wing nationalists of Ukraine to take over the government in some manner - thus giving him justification for an expanded war, and a way to tell the west "see? Nazis!" and tell his people "see? The west is Nazis!"

If that's not his gameplan, and he simply intends to hold onto all territory south of the Dinipro, and solidify his holdings in the Donbass so that he can keep the Crimean Canal flowing, then he's in for a bit of a protracted war here..

yeah this is article 4 territory ("let's talk about this and our response as a group"), not article 5 ("enemy attacked us, y'all are now going to help me repel this attack/destroy this enemy"). they'll discuss what they think is an appropriate response and do it

result likely to be some limited response attacks at most, and an uptick in aid given to ukraine/uptick in aggressiveness of our policy on the whole thing

Yeah, we haven't seen anyone go to Defcon 3 or anything...

But if Russia is gonna lob missiles, miss, and hit neighbours and knock out power to multiple countries, then yeah... it's time to give Ukraine some real big shit...

Perhaps even more 'contractors' - No doubt there are some NATO military members who have been 'discharged' in able for them to go on special assignments in Ukraine. There's a chance you might find more Poles lining the Dinipro after this.

if you don't know what we're referring to, a russian-made missile or 2 landed in poland yesterday and killed 2 people. people went ahead and assumed it was shot by russia, you know, like the other 900 that have been shot by russia at civilian shit this year. then it was found that it was likely an errant defensive missile shot by ukraine. NATO/poland said okay, honest mistake, watch it!

thus constituting the biggest win russia and its pathetic online fans have logged so far

ukraine has been trying to escape its "shifty" soviet style past, that's basically the entire point of this war man. they've handled themselves super well throughout the war so far

Never said it wasn't bad. You can believe the invasion was unjust yet still be critical of supporting ukraine. Jesus dude.

This isn't unique to NS, reddit is filled with people like biffbarf, zues, TL, milfhuner, yungona, etc people who just post bullshit cause they either 1. believe it's true (idiots) or 2. get great satisfaction out of triggering people. Both are stupid, I understand the latter at least, but there are true nut jobs out there (and on this website) that believe everything they post and tbh its just sad.

that's great you want to be a skeptic but being skeptical doesn't stop at "question everything." the shit you're repeating is stuff that you move past on day 1 if you put just a tiny bit of effort in

also idk if you spend much time with military folks but if we're going to vilify every country that has some tiny percentage of extremist idiots in its military, we'll have to throw em all out

re: propaganda, we staged the famous shot of planting the flag on iwo jima. would you bring that up in a discussion on who was the good guy and bad guy in ww2? no you wouldn't because that would be fucking retarded

Eheath berated and belittled me in his post without acknowledging anything I've posted, you've been alright.

I've served in the US military. While systems aren't perfect to disallow extremists, US military members swear an oath to defend the constitution against enemies foreign and domestic, and even if someone who is a fascist slips thru the ranks there is no way in hell would they be allowed to form a unit based on their extremist beliefs. This is the fundamental difference and why I have such a hard time with it.

I don't like the propganda regardless of what side. The US has also used propeganda with the gulf of tonkin, the bay of pigs, the korean 'conflict'. They've proved they'll lie about good, and they'll lie about bad. I do not like being lied to, it will erode my trust regardless of the cause.

Again, I'm NOT saying I support russia, but I'm also not interested at all in being team america world police for Ukraine for the reasons above.

Seems that the skepticism in this case though is really just as one sided as the people you're being critical of

If someone was talking about Russia using Wagner group, and their neonazis ties, I wouldn't necessarily agree with it but I could see a comparison to the small group of neonazis in Ukraine.

But when someone says "Hey, the bombing of civilian infrastructure, killing of civilians, lying to their own troops, imprisoning dissenesents, and occupating and invading a European country in the 21st century that they signed treaties with not to invade... Is pretty shitty" and the "skeptic" response "well you can't really tell, Ukraine does bad things too and they have a very small group of neonazis" it kinda seems like your just carrying water for Russia.

I think everyone who isn't some rabid neolib understands that it's war, and that Ukraine engages in bad activities. People are probably a little more focused on Russia though, because they are doing those same things at a much greater scale. It just feel like the "skeptics" aren't actually skeptics. They just go way off in the other directions. Reads more like contrairianism than skepticism
