Rails r destroying my skis

Hey guys new to the community and stoked to be here.

Been through two pairs of Line Bacons the last two years. Was more focusing on all mountain but now I am primarily riding park. Last year a sidewall blew out and I was able to get this years model under warranty. The top of this years model are separating from the edges after 15~ days on them (from an impact). Looking for a very durable park ski so I don’t have to shell out money for more pairs. Something that can take bigger spins and jumps but also very durable for rails. Looking into Honeybadgers because they are cheaper but hear a lot of good stuff about ON3Ps. Any advice would be appreciated.

Badgers would probably get destroyed even faster than the bacons…

I’m on my third season with my k2 poachers, just a couple of edge cracks. My friends ride armadas and they have been pretty solid as well. K2s or armadas would also be a lot cheaper than on3p.

just a heads up youre going to break a lot of skis no matter what you buy thats just life. to extend the life of a ski detune the edge under foot, try to land smoother, and epoxy the edge cracks

I love it when kids are shocked when they find out hitting metal rails and smacking their skis into hard objects damages their skis.


Here's a solution, stay out of the park so your skis can look pretty! Stupid fucking gapers.

Yo I'm sorry but this is just how rail skiing is. Everyone says ON3Ps are super bombproof which I guess makes sense considering that they're made in an indie American factory. You could also buy beater skis on Locals Sale or something. Otherwise I'm not really sure.

Some ski brand needs to make rail skis that are like super cheap and designed to just be bought every so often when they break. Like cheap skateboard bearings. because at the end of the day, skis are inherently weak products and even ON3Ps will get messed up by rails.

Skis will break over time, detune before hitting park to prolong life, which you now know of.

Make sure you detune your edges. Csn still fuck your skis up hitting rails but detuning underfoot will save you from a lot of bad things.

Honestly if I skied park I would just get some nice bindings and troll craigslist for cheap park skis every few years. They are going to get destroyed at the end of the season doing rails anyway. Then keep your nice skis for all mountain riding. You can get about 10-15 seasons out of skis if you treat them right and keep up on waxing and epoxy any topsheet damage.

You just have to be prepared to go through a lot of skis if you're hitting rails a lot. Try to find used or closeout skis for park and have a nice pair that you don't hit rails with.

I’m 3 seasons in on a pair of ARWs, I ski park and all mountain on them and they’re still going strong. Get the male version (ARVs) and define the edges underfoot.

is this a serious comment? I have a pair of 2018 k2 pinnacles that are 119 underfoot 191 length that I got for stupid cheap but I rarely use them. Would def be willing to beat up but they’re so heavy

Armada is a safe bet, they're known for their park skis as well as being pretty durable. Like others have said the ARV is their typical "park" skis but you can also check out their signature series. As for detuning it's basically just dulling the edges on your skis of where you're gonna be sliding, you can find videos on youtube or NS for how to do that. If you're getting a ski purely for park then detuning edges is usually ideal if you wanna slide rails easier.

It preserves the ski a bit too. The thermal stress caused by metal on metal friction, then quenching them in the snow will cause micro fractures. These fractures are more concentrated on sharp edges. Once the microfracture begins, it will spread outwards and nothing can be done to stop it. The endpoints of a crack is the area subjected to higher stress and will propagate unless you drill the crack end points for stress relief. Obviously this isnt possible on something small like ski edges.
By detuning them, you smoothen out the sharp edge and prevent thermal stress fractures from forming. Its materials theory!

It's mainly just the impact stresses, especially from coming down and landing on rails, that causes the sharp corners to consentrate stresses and cause cracks to form or grow. The frictional heat is probably equal to or less than when you take the skis out of your car and throw them on the snow.

k2 poacher is my recommendation. ON3P (in my experience) gets beat up quick in park. While riding my on3ps I met this guy who had poachers with 140+ days in park on them and they were beat but holding (in comparison I had 10 days on my on3ps and were blown out)... I bought a pair of poachers and so far have had similar experience (bashing them but they still hold together completely).

Remember that the edges are are thin and steel has a poor heat conductivity property. Heat stress will build first at its finest point, then spread. They get red hot, you can see sparks at night. The snow quenches them, breaking the grain boundary.
Take a good look under the binding of 2+year old skis. They will always have cracks, its the water in them that freeze that cause them to delam there.

Detuning is not a silver bullet, but I always get an extra season out of them when I do.

Poachers will last the longest and are the cheapest of the durable park skis. But you will destroy skis hitting rails regardless. A brand new pair of last years poachers are like $400-$500, and you will easily get 2-3 years out of them if you’re just learning.
