Looking to buy my first gears

Hi everyone,

I'm a 28 yo french guy, currently living in Haute-Savoie (France).

I've been skiing since I can walk, but haven't ride in 10 years : I lived by the north coast before moving there... And daddy told me I had to pay for my rides after turning 18... So yeah, it's been a while. I've done some session recently but with different gears everytime.

I used to just rent gears, but now I live here, I'd like to actually purchase skis. It's where it gets complicated, since I don't know much about pretty much everything gear related.

I'm looking for polyvalent skis, for piste and freeride. I don't do tricks for now, but my circle of friends do, so I assume I'll experiment some. I mostly want to be able to follow them outside of pistes, without struggling hardcore to move.

I'm 168 cm, so 10cm less would be neat, if i'm correct.
I'd like a double rocker, and at least 90-100 on the skate sideline (I got large feet, because they are semi-flat)

It's quite hard for me to find skis fulfilling those characteristics, and I wanted to have some advice on specific gears, without burning my full wage on it. Like 500€ budget max (570$).

Any help would be apprecied :)

(PS : I already got the shoes, which are Alias 80 by Rossignol. I got them cheap and they do the job, I just regret the lack of flex)

Yeah Annecy is beautiful ; I live in Morzine-Avoriaz myself, which is way closer to Switzerland, I can be there in just a few lifts.

Never been skiing outside of France/Spain/Italy/Switzerland. Perhaps I'll get the chance to ride in the US or eastern europe.

(I got that kid in the school I'm working in, he's called Aspen, so it's either a sign, either just bad taste of a name)

those are longer but i dont think you should go on the shorter side skiing where you are (lucky bastard)

you can add squire bindings for €98 bringing the total to a little under €500. NS hates on them but nobody is going to care in real life and theyll probably be fine for your first setup

Length yes if youre looking to ‘freeride’ your skis should be taller than you, especially skiing on big open slopes. It will give you more stability

NS hates on the bindings probably because they are the base model and are not as durable/reliable as the €200+ models(obviously) but if your just getting back into it theyll be fine

Check out some Faction Prodigy 1.0 or 2.0. They won't break the bank and have the specs you're looking for. Really versatile.

New Atomic Bent Chetler 90’s just came out. Think they run like $500 from what I remember seeing. There’s also the 100 but its going to run you $100 more.

Check out sportbittl they have some good deals on setups.

You should be looking at about 100mm waist and lengths right around your height or a little shorter 165-172 or so, skis are usually a little shorter than listed because of the way they are measured.. What is your weight?

Tough to read perhaps, but I assume it to be understandable with a little effort, isn't it ?

Also, neither rich, neither a kid. I live in the mountains and work there.

Btw I found it to be dishonnest to lecture someone for being rich because of its physical activity, especially one you practice aswell (on a different scale obviously)

Let's be honnest, skiing IS expensive, but I doubt that everyone on this forum is rich.

Yes indeed, like I mentioned earlier I'm french. I do speak 4 languages and am still learning every day.

all jokes aside, you should find something used. Skis have so many different characteristics. You can think about what you might like, but when you are skiing you could find out that you guessed wrong.

id start off with something light and soft. My sister, an intermediate skier, loves her elan ripsticks.

better to put the minimum amount of of money into it until you are absolutely certain of what you want from a ski.
