I think a lot of people missed the "I'm open for discussion" part and jumped right into knee-jerk reactions.
Btw words that are homonyms with slurs or very similar to slurs aren't new and frankly are always kinda tricky. See also:

I think most people could agree that not intending something as a slur means its better than just blatantly calling people slurs, but still can be iffy especially with certain context. Personally, I'm totally willing to hear the trans community out on this and have a reasonable discussion on it. Just don't be a dick.
Also also waiting until I see this thread mentioned and/or screenshotted on IG, probably by queercork, wap the whites, or similar.
