Best skiing in Colorado for March skiing?

Copper mountain. Mellow mountain with all the amenities families want on the mountain with frisco just a stone throws away for cheap (relatively) hotels.
Book early.

Lol I'll be helpful op. You're gonna get a lot of hate cuz for one reason or another Texans are the plague of ski communities especially Colorado purist cocksuckers on here 😂. Anyway Wolf Creek is the shit. Probably half the tourists there at any given time are from Texas so you'll fit in. The average ability of skiers is on the low end so if you're self-conscious, this is the spot for you; this also probably helps with finding stashes days later. It doesn't have lodging at the base so you're restricted to either Pagosa Springs or North/South Fork. I prefer Pagosa as a town over north/south fork. People say the road from Pagosa is worse but I'd beg to differ even when it's snowy as fuck cuz they do a fantastic job of plowing. As long as you got snow tires or awd/4wd and know how to drive in the snow, it's easy. Only bad thing is the sun in your face for like 2 minutes and if they get hella snow, they could shut down the pass from Pagosa for avalanche mitigation (not sure how much of an issue that is from the other side so maybe someone local could comment). Wolf Creek is a more mellower mountain and smaller vertical than most western resorts so runs here will obviously be shorter. It's great for snow and I've reliably found stashes 7+ days after a storm. The crowds are nonexistent compared to other resorts; last year even with covid restrictions it wasn't bad when I visited on a weekend to avoid crowds at bigger places. Tickets aren't too horrible but they're creeping up there. The amount of groomed trails is limited but enough to keep you occupied if that's your thing. Even though you call yourself an intermediate or intermediate/advanced skier, there's plenty of tree skiing, ungroomed terrain, and even some pretty mellow hike-to areas. They're also one of the few resorts that I'll actually pay to eat their cafeteria food cuz the chili is tits.

I know there's some people who regularly ski Wolf Creek on here so hopefully they can chime in.


Edit: One thing to add since you mentioned your preference and ability by the color rating system, is those ratings are resort specific. A blue at one place might be a black at others and vice versa. Wolf Creek's blacks (in general) lean more towards the blue side compared to other resorts I've been to. Please don't take that as a blanket statement and go kill yourself on something but that's just my two cents. It's an easier mountain to ski.

If you're driving just make sure you're prepared for that. Winter tires or all seasons + chains (required). March =/= 24/7 spring conditions, more than likely you'll see snow on the road through Colorado even in March. Keep the roads clear, move over when able to let people pass, etc. You'll be everyone's favorite Texan in no time, enjoy.

Wolf Creek is super sick with tons of snow. I think the road up from South Fork is a little more mellow, but Pagosa definitely is the better place to stay. Can’t beat soaking in the hot springs after a day of shredding. Have fun dude!

Anyway, thanks very much to @50Kal, @HypeBeast, @buck_nasty, and @edai for providing such helpful information. It has been a long time since I've been to Colorado so it is hard to gauge what I need to prepare for and chains and/or snow tires didn't cross my mind. For the past ten years all my skiing has been in resorts surrounding Banff, CA and I know we've been spoiled. Never needed chains or snow tires for any resort there and there are always shuttles as well. I just noticed that the shuttle from Pagosa to Wolf Creek is $120, round-trip each day for 1 - 4 people. Ouch, that seems steep.

I did look at Copper Mountain as well as some other ski resorts / areas, and geesh, the week of March 12th - 19th just seems brutal. Anything available costs a fortune and flights are incredibly high. It is clear people are ready to move past the pandemic ruling their lives.

The two cars we have do have front-wheel and four-wheel drive, but probably have all-season tires on them at best. I wouldn't mind renting a car to drive up there, but I don't think Houston is going to have anything with winter tires. I might look into it.

Thanks for this. I just checked and my car is actually 4-wheel drive and it does have all-season tires on it that are only a few months old, not to mention the tires are pretty wide (245s) for a large sedan.

I had already thought about getting some chains just as you suggested. Snow socks seem interesting, but I know chains are better and probably required in some cases.

For real though if you're looking to cruise blues any ski area is going to have snow. March can be the snowiest month in CO. Please be prepared and courteous on the roads as much as possible. I see unprepared drivers more often than not in rentals or with out of state plates in the ditch or spinning their tires going nowhere every single time it snows.

March is the best time to visit CO for skiing. u really cant go wrong with any of the resorts. I'd try somewhere you have not yet been, maybe a smaller mountain?

They have some pretty good skiing in New Mexico. Colorado sucks do not go there.
