Detuning question (serious)

Okay this is not a meme,

I grabbed some Vishnu Wets this year because I was really curious about the amount of rocker + being in a 189 cause I'm "big boned" (also a really cool brand). I was going to have them de-tuned under foot because I futz around on boxes and rails throughout the season, but the shop tech sort of talked me out of it. He exclaimed that not having those underfoot edges will turn my skiing into a surfy madness. Will de tuning really affect the quality of riding that much? (east cost skier). I don't want to catch on a rail and eat total shit, or destroy my edges, but then again I don't want all mountain skiing to be "annoying" without the edge.

Can a rail rat with totally fuckin smooth edges please advise?

dude I got 189 wets and I did a detune underfoot and a mild detune on the whole ski after a couple runs cause they felt weird and grabby, after the detune it was surfy madness

also detuning prevents edge cracks so yeah that tech is wrong

When I got my first pair I didn't detune, I saw emmet at the bonezone and he asked me if I had detuned and I said no. He just looked so disappointed in me. Don't disappoint emmet!

You can’t really get the ceramic factory tune back once you dull it- but for those it’s not like you’re spending your mornings on a GS course, detune away that’s what they are for

I’ve never once detuned my skis I always just hit a couple rails and by the end of the first day my edges are how I like them. Dulling your edges underfoot definitely effects your ability to carve on hard snow/ice so it’s really a question of how much park vs all mountain skiing you are doing.

This is a horrible idea. Enjoy getting edge cracks and shortening the lifespan of your skis.

I mean it’s a trade off but if the snow is semi-soft you can carve/grip. But ice is difficult. You do get used to applying pressure and feeling the limit of grip. But yeah they won’t ski like a GS ski. However, I’ve got some detuned skis underfoot (light detune but smooth on rails) and they rail GS turns pretty hard as long as it isn’t icy (I’m in Colorado too though so snow is often decent). Like I mentioned though, you can feel when the edge gives and you lose grip. Gotta be light on your feet.

If you're detuned and put 'em on edge and hit firm snow you'll lose it.

You didnt buy vishnus to race in a slalom course, you bought em to smash into picnic tables n shit. Detune them yourself, the shop techs will never understand.

If you're looking for an all mountain ski that can be ridden hard and sometimes hit the park that has full rocker you should have bought some devs. Vishnu's are noodles almost exclusively for sliding shit. Supporting Indy brands is dope but these skis are a tool for a very specific use. Detune and slide stuff or sell them and buy an all mountain twin tip

But seriously, if your gonna be hitting rails at all, detune the skis. I can still ski all mountain with them detuned but it’s not the most fun.


Also, detuning your skis is fairly easy, all you need is a file and gummy stone. It’s not really something you need a shop for

definitely detune, but don’t go crazy. i didn’t and was pissed asf when i couldn’t pretz swap. brought my file and incrementally went until i felt good again haha. just remember you can’t get that edge back go little by little.

He’s not wrong about detunes, they definitely do affect the on snow feel and would definitely make a ski feel looser. If you’re skiing rails most of the time you spend skiing, get the detune. Sharp edges and rails are not your friend.

Catch an edge on a rail and I guarantee you will detune any pair you buy after that experience.

i got some wets this season too, detuning is a must if you want the ski to last. you can feel the difference after but you can still catch an edge as long as it's not straight ice. like others said above, go incrementally and feel it out

I have magnus 90s wherr the edge is literally ripped out underfoot. I teach lessons and i can turn just fine
