Yes there were certain tribes that were peaceful / or very vulnerable that westerners abused and or killed. There were also many tribes that would brutally war with one another effectively committing what would fit your description of “genocide” on one another. Cannibalism, rape and murdering of family members in front of the conquered victims, child sacrifice type rituals were relevant.

(that’s happened in many western cultures at some point in history as well)

Combine this with complete social differences. (Natives trading land for goods then coming back to take said land) and also yes a lot of un ethical taking of land / horrid things settlers did to native people. It makes a very messy situation that was terrible.

I’m not arguing what happened wasn’t wrong. I think settlers did in-fact wipe out the native population of course, but the word genocide doesn’t seem to apply since the disease was indirect / there were other factors that lead to what happened.

The Holocaust is a perfect example of what the word genocide means / is extremely different if you compare the two.

AndrewGravesSVYou really seem to be trivializing what settlers and the US government did to Native Americans to destroy their culture and way of life through breaking treaties, wars, displacement of them from ancestral lands, and forced assimilation. Personally, I don't think you can just lump all Native Americans into one group considering each tribe has its own beliefs, societal structures, history and practices. Considering theat the removal of them from their lands which are intrinsically linked to their ways of life then we effectively destroyed their people without even mentioning migration death statistics. Native Americans were always going to stand in the way of America's ideals of freedom for white men (Manifest Destiny) and against that backdrop the destruction of native peoples cannot be see as anything but deliberate.

Nitpick through the definition of the word genocide all you want but the fact is that an entire continent of people and their ways of life was destroyed by white settlers for white settlers' benefit while the indigenous people are measurably worse off.

@LANTASKILet me preface this first by saying I think Eileen Gu is an incredible athlete. Clearly she has taken women's skiing to another level and thats cool I guess for the people that are into women's skiing.

While I understand her decision to compete for China given her mother's nationality, her marketability in China as a Gold Winning Skier in a burgeoning snow sports market etc, I still question her judgement and the ethics of skiing for Nation with an Authoritarian Regime that imprisons its religious minorities in concentration camps, censors and restricts the basic human rights of its citizens.

I don't check NS as much as I did 20 years ago, but I find it hard to believe this is only rustlin my jimmies?

I find it disappointing that the switch from the US Ski Team to China is essentially a cash grab/sell out move and it is disappointing seeing these actions taken in a sport that was created by a bunch of dirtbags (I say that with the utmost reverence) who wanted to change skiing from the overbearing regulation and stifling nature of the FIS.
