To be fair to the PRC, if North Korea had fallen to the west, then there's a real good chance the USA would have established a military base pretty much right on the Yalu River...

It's fair to say that if anything like this happened with the USA, they'd have supported any piece of shit to keep Russia or China out as well...

...like they have all over the world with guys like Pinochet in Chile, or Batista in Cuba, or even the Baathist coup in Iraq that put Saddam Hussain in power - which, at the very least the USA completely condoned. I mean, just read about Operation Condor.

Yeah, the PRC is a piece of shit for keeping the Kims around, but its entirely because it serves as a buffer zone between them and a strong US ally in ROK. It's the same reason why Russia fears Ukraine joining the EU, or especially, NATO.

Yes there were certain tribes that were peaceful / or very vulnerable that westerners abused and or killed. There were also many tribes that would brutally war with one another effectively committing what would fit your description of “genocide” on one another. Cannibalism, rape and murdering of family members in front of the conquered victims, child sacrifice type rituals were relevant.

(that’s happened in many western cultures at some point in history as well)

Combine this with complete social differences. (Natives trading land for goods then coming back to take said land) and also yes a lot of un ethical taking of land / horrid things settlers did to native people. It makes a very messy situation that was terrible.

I’m not arguing what happened wasn’t wrong. I think settlers did in-fact wipe out the native population of course, but the word genocide doesn’t seem to apply since the disease was indirect / there were other factors that lead to what happened.

The Holocaust is a perfect example of what the word genocide means / is extremely different if you compare the two.

Personally, I don't think you can just lump all Native Americans into one group considering each tribe has its own beliefs, societal structures, history and practices. Considering theat the removal of them from their lands which are intrinsically linked to their ways of life then we effectively destroyed their people without even mentioning migration death statistics. I didn’t lump all natives into one group, yes practices were different across tribes but that doesn’t change the fact there were tons of terrible practices at the time. (Scandinavians / Viking culture was brutal as well, so I’m not implying anyone’s heritage is free of crazy practices)

everything else you said above makes sense and I don’t disagree with. I’m making the point that genocide is not the correct term. You might think vocabulary and definitions don’t matter, but it actually does.

You cannot argue that the USA would not condone horrific acts and human rights violations if you examined what happened with DINA under Pinochet alone... not to mention many other places with horrible monsters in power that the USA refused(s) to depose simply because they acted as a deterrence to communism or otherwise... Look at the state-sponsored terrorism condoned by the USA in Nicaragua until the Sandinistas took over or El Salvador during the 80s...

China makes money from selling a lot of mass-produced products, and its economy grows so long as its global consumer base grows (that's part of why they're investing in Africa right now - to increase their potential consumer base, improve their trade routes, and develop a sphere of influence)

Throwing a deadly virus into the air in order to Thanos the population down a bit goes entirely against the entire structure of their mixed market economy and demand for consumer base growth.

You cannot make such an argument without ample evidence, and a massive part of that evidence is the 'why'.

@LANTASKILet me preface this first by saying I think Eileen Gu is an incredible athlete. Clearly she has taken women's skiing to another level and thats cool I guess for the people that are into women's skiing.

While I understand her decision to compete for China given her mother's nationality, her marketability in China as a Gold Winning Skier in a burgeoning snow sports market etc, I still question her judgement and the ethics of skiing for Nation with an Authoritarian Regime that imprisons its religious minorities in concentration camps, censors and restricts the basic human rights of its citizens.

I don't check NS as much as I did 20 years ago, but I find it hard to believe this is only rustlin my jimmies?

I find it disappointing that the switch from the US Ski Team to China is essentially a cash grab/sell out move and it is disappointing seeing these actions taken in a sport that was created by a bunch of dirtbags (I say that with the utmost reverence) who wanted to change skiing from the overbearing regulation and stifling nature of the FIS.

I guess we've officially gone the way of snowboarding
