To me it seems like Bogus Basin is using sidewalls to make the snow drift and build up faster. Seems pretty misleading and shady as fuck. Do other resorts do this??
Feel like this helps ir hurts the measurement depending on the direction of the wind. Wind coming from behind and not much snow is landing on the platform.

opposite, maybe, wind from the back would create a pocket with less wind and more would build up, a bit like slopes that are wind loaded
i would bet whoever on the marketing team designed the backdrop for the ruler just didn’t know it would affect the snow buildup. accidentally misleading? idk how much more it inflates the amount tho seems not much more than regular at those levels
Idk why u would even lie about it like i live in mn where we dont rlly get that much snow but if i heard some place got lots of snow i wouldnt pay extra just to go there

I was there today and it wasn’t the 8 inches that they claimed. I don’t think that the stake is built to fudge snow totals but it probably happens depending on the way the wind is blowing
I started doing it when I got into the BC more, but seriously, if you want more accurate snow totals/conditions reports, your local avalanche center (if you have one) is wayyyy better than the resort. They have zero interest in inflating numbers, and generally tend to give a good overview of the broader conditions as well. For example, when last Saturday Taos said "5 new inches of powder!!!!", Taos Avalanche Center said this:
4 to 7 inches of new snow has mostly fallen on bare ground except at upper elevations on north through east aspects where new snow has fallen on old faceted snow
that lingered from earlier in the season. The big story with this
storm was the strong winds accompanying it. Strong SW to W winds has
easily transported new snow into stiffening wind drifted slabs on the leeward sides of ridgelines and on cross-loaded slopes at upper elevations. Pay attention to obvious signs of wind loading
like pillows, stiffening snow underfoot that may feel drummy and sound
hollow as well as shooting cracks on the surface. A good rule of thumb
right now is any slope that looks enticing to ski or ride should be
considered suspect. The majority of the snow fell on bare ground and
travel is treacherous as lots of ground hazards exist.
So now not only do I have a more realistic estimate of the totals, I also know lots of area is likely wind slab or thin cover instead of a nice consistent 5" pow day.
I think the back is there so the wind isn’t blowing the snow off of the platform. Also it gives you a good gauge on the direction of the wind if you know where the camera is at. It was 6” in most spots with the wind filling in other areas at around 11”. Today was better because we received 5” more. The snow steak is never accurate at Bogus and that’s a good thing because it’s usually lower than the spots that fill in from the wind.
Look at the BOGUS snowstake at Kirkwood. Those corporate shills at Vail using snow barriers to funnel more snow into the snow stake! I'm onto you Vail!!!

Yeah bro, angling the camera downward so the snowline, which was carved out a foot behind the stake where an obvious drift has formed, appears higher up is like SO accurate!

I have many snide things to say here but imma keep em to myself and say enjoy the snow you got. I don't remember Bogus having many double digit snow days.

Lmao dude this snowstake is so inaccurate it's hilarious. During this last storm wind blew the snow off the stake completely and it didn't catch up until the entire stake was buried from the ground. It's already a running joke basically. Better off looking at the boulder in the background to see how much snow they've got. Also the stake is at like 7800' and most of kirkwood (the good parts at least) are 8500'-9300'
You really are just anti fun huh. Like ok lets angle it totally horizontal to the stake except then the camera would get totally buried regularly. You're real smart dude.
That bogus stake looks like a snow stake for ants. Are you sure those are Inches on that ruler? Those sidewalls would have to be 14" high!
Sunshine Village loves plugging their "height of snow" snowstake as if it means anything. Yeah, the rocks will be slightly more covered...
When they do show a fresh snow stake, it is a running storm total that can be left uncleared for days. And now that the recent storm has let up, that webcam is down because you don't want to show an uncovered board.
When the temperatures go above freezing, the temperatures come off the webcams.
They just need to chill out. Yeah they might not be able to go head to head with the Revelstoke gnome or Kicking Horse but at least it very rarely rains there and the conditions will never be terrible.
