That "they" (your family and friends) will know you for the wrong reason, a completely preventable and premature death? I know plenty of insanely smart people struggling with substance issues. And I know people who are gone now and technically had “wasted talent” due to addiction. He’s probably telling the truth and just doesn’t have decades of his friends dying and his body getting wrecked to see it’s not anything to brag about
