- they create more barriers to entry with their points system and shit
- don't care about athlete safety, haven't been receptive of skiers when they've complained about sketchy conditions
- run by a bunch of guys who are getting rich off of other skiers talent, who don't give anything back to the scene
idk dude can you explain to me why I should like FIS?
to put it simply, they are a governing body. skiing does not need to be governed.
Its a little different now that the internet has made distribution of ski content way easier, but for a while they basically had a monopoly on skiing's culture and did nothing but directly/indirectly box it in for the better part of a century; see the rise/fall of hotdog skiing from the late 60s to about 1979-80ish
I think a majority of NSers that say fuck FIS are talking about the FIS freestyle and not FIS racing. Fuck FIS Freestyle tho, It turns being a pro freestyle skiers into a linear path that involves being rich AF and going to a ski academy.
I remeber the thread or article a few years back maybe last season but dealing with the women and unsafe conditions and jump angles/distance. They don't seem to see individuals more of an overall product
It’s funny because us freestylers talk about “fuck FIS” and almost act like it’s only us.
Dude auto racing hates FIA (their governing body) too

Yea it seems like the structure and regulation of FIS is more needed for a sport like world cup racing with how tight the margins are in races. Lame for freestyle tho
It seems like the few organizations in skiing exist just to rob relatively broke people of their money. FIS, PSIA, NSP, etc. it's all just a cash grab.

It’s mostly how they are/were with moguls. Forever they were hardcore anti grabs and inverts, off axis spins were banned. This was really before there was an established slope style and big air contest scene so newschool skiers were initially trying to push the mogul scene in that direction
ColoradoDogfartI had absolutely no idea he never got them, last convo we had was over a year ago however I’m makin sure to do right upon it
Let me clear that up before people think I’m calling @ColoradoDogfart out or anything because I’m not. I sent the money and totally forgot about it and it most likely got lost in the mail. I’m not mad at all honestly didn’t remember anything about it until I saw this thread.
They bought the rights to world cup moguls comps; including footage. You cannot post a FIS race footage online due to copyright issues, even if you filmed it. They killed skiing by blocking competition footage

Damm I didn’t realize that you couldn’t even post self-filmed footage, that’s so shit

DH MTB hates the UCI as well. There are actually many similarities. They're mostly a road biking org, know nothing about DH, book crappy venues (like Leogang before they made it gnarly in 2020), don't listen to rider feedback, sell the rights to world champs to NBC, etc etc
IsaacNW82True, they can also suck a fat one, but for other reasons
As much as I loved instructing I'm glad I won't be working in a ski school/PSIA setting anymore. My hill was pretty relaxed about that stuff but it was still annoying at times, especially in instructor clinics.
mrk127Someone start a PSIA hate thread, I wanna hear why
It's pretty simple actually. They view skiing as an academic discipline. There is one standard of form that everyone must strive to achieve. No matter how much different terrain you can confidently ski, if your form can be critiqued you are not a 'good' skier. Doesn't help that that standard changes every few years so that target is constantly moving and every clinician has a different standard in mind when telling other very confident skiers how to ski.
The term 'freeskiing' gets used in almost a negative way. They recently set standards for freestyle instruction but the fact that there are standards takes away from the true purprose of park/free skiing.
In their training of instructors they can be very narrow in hiw to teach students. It leaves very little room for an instructor to improvise and help students overcome barriers in their development. At times the standards of student progression feel like they are just trying to sell more lessons then let students cruise through if they progress at a quicker rate.

Im too lazy to do so but the TL;DR is general close-mindedness and huge egos. A lot of Park and Freeride skiers have respect for the different disciplines of skiing. Many PSIA certified Instructors I taught with have no respect for Park or Freeride skiers. When you are a ski instructor and happy to respect their abilities and learn from them, but they openly shit on your abilities, it is very frustrating

For me, it's petty.. But the amount of times I've been cut off in the park by ski racer kids that have no idea how to ski in the park... It's caused me to have a lot of disdain for ski racers hahaha

I teach at my local, and I have the level 1 and freestyle certification, but I don’t really have much experience dealing with PSIA/AASI. I actually have the AASI cert bc I teach snowboarding, and have heard from ski instructor homies that the skiing side of the school sucks ass and it is really restrictive. Over in the snowboarding side, we are encouraged to find different ways to teach as we gain experience, and we are given a lot of freedom when teaching. I bet the organization as a whole is kinda like this where the skiers are restrictive fucks and the snowboarders are a lot more free and open. Just some thoughts that crossed my mind reading this thread.
Oh great, a generation of kids with soccer moms who are being pushed into competing because they want to be famous and they actually like the FIS......
Let me guess, you have posters of the Fagans on your wall? Fucking jock gapers.
