Does anybody know if any rabbit breeders have tried breeding more and more intelligent rabbits?
Lately I've been reading a ton about domestication and think it's super interesting. When I retire I want to start breeding coyotes like nuts to see over the years how tame you can get them.
They did a huge experiment in Russia with foxes and claim that they got them good enough to be decent pets. A few were sold off towards the end apparently but I've never read reports from how they really were integrated with a family.
They tried with minks too iirc. I guess they were too hard to breed rapidly in captivity to make significant progress.
-They use a litterbox
-are perfectly content interacting by themselves(as in with their rat pack in their cage) and can be left alone with food and water
-Genuinely like humans and will want to interact and socialize with you as opposed to most guinea pigs and hamsters which just cower
-Wicked Smart, wicked cute beasts
-They can eat almost anything
Disadvantages:
They steal your heart and then die in 2 years or less.

From what i have read you can only train rabbits to piss in litter if you start them early on. But they will still shit everywhere even if you piss train them. I get the sense that shit just randomly falls out of rabbits asses and the rabbits dont even notice it.
But just like dog breeds you can easily breed for intelligence.
Border collies are alot smarter than pomeranians for example.

I saw a documentary about how the russians bred the foxes for friendlyness in one group and unfriendlyness in the other group. Apparently the colors of the foxes changed as they bred the foxes one way or another. Linked traits apparently.

How come they have been able to breed rats for domestication better than hamsters and guinea pigs?
