Help with shin bang

I was advancing to the phat jumps at my local park once the season was coming to an end. I got really nasty shin bang in the last month because of having small calves so my boots wont get tight enough everywhere, and from landing backseat when trying new things a lot. I got booster straps but it still wasn't enough.

I also am using some all mountain skis that have really stiff, short tails and I was wondering if I should look at swapping to a little softer, rocker tailed skis along with new boots, or just get new boots.

My question is basically can having skis with softer, rockered tails prevent shin bang when I'm hitting the park and messing up big jumps in the backseat all the time as I progress? Or does the ski not matter?

I only weight 125ibs and I'm 5'9". I have 90 flex dalbello panterra boots right now and fisher watea 88 from 2012.

This sounds weird but whenever you feel like you’re gonna land backseat or when you’re going through choppy stuff curl your toes and kinda lift the front of your foot, I had ski boots that were like 2 sizes too small and I’d get super shit shin bang anytime I landed anything and I even fucked up my toes super bad and I started curling my toes because I guess it was my body’s natural instinct or something but it literally stopped the shin bang and general foot pain super well. Not sure if it’s for everyone or if my feet are just really fucked up from just being fucked up but I’d say it’s worth a try

get new boots that fit very well, then step 2 is filling the volume in the front of your boots any way you can. I'm the same way where I have a tall calve and my muscle sits above the boot for the most part. What I've found that works is a booster strap + foam padding over my shin bone running down the length of the boot. If you're skiing a lot in the backseat, it won't really help you, but if you're like me, it'll help a lot. It's all about taking up the volume in your boot so that your shin isn't getting a bunch of torque on it when you move around back and forth.

Can coozies, put those on ur shin to fill the space. Also booster straps might be able to anchor down ur boot

This. Get smaller boots. If your shins and calves are too small you could try to start doing exercises to beef your calves/shins up.


correct me if I’m wrong but I feel like soccer players don’t get shin bang bc their shins are steel

You might be onto something. I ski really small boots so my toes are always curled and I’ve never had shin bang. Or it’s just that I don’t land backseat a ton or ski huge features

Yea OP sounds like you need a spoiler for you boots cuz you say you have small calves. Idk if it needs to go on your calve or shin. I'd recommend getting a plastic spoiler for specific for ski boots if it needs to be in the back of the boot. Never tried it but the can coozies is a great idea if you need to fill up some space on your shins

Small trick that helps minimise shin bang (other than getting better at not landing backseat). Get tube grip compression bandages, cut them to twice the length of your shin, double them up and put them on under your socks (not as a pad but actually how you would normally wear them as a bandage), no idea how it works but it does!
