Since when did wishing you were a skateboarder become core?
i feel like its always been a thing since the early days at least a bit. skate culture influence is always there to some degree in like every sport, esp snowboarding which skiing then kinda copied off
deathcookieIs skiing cool on its own, or do we need to convince people it is by linking ourselves to a completely different sport? No other extreme sports do this shit in their videos.
the problem with skiing is it holds the OG action sport title with surfing but has soooo much more baggage associated with it because of FIS. Freeskiing has a legit cultural history thats about as old as skateboarding but for whatever reason the park ski industry has just kind of accepted the narrative that skiing was always lame until snowboarding came around and then our dumb asses finally figured out how to be cool. Don't get me wrong snowboarding is a pretty major reason why we are where we are now but hot dog skiing in the late 60s/early 70s is a heavily neglected part of our history that basically only survives in parodies and warren miller movies of people doing spread eagles and eating shit. Meanwhile Ed Lincoln was doing the OG lincoln loop/flat 3/rodeo 3 and you can't even find a shot of it that shows takeoff/landing.
for what its worth skateboarding used to have some wierd identity crisis shit going on with skiing back in the day, check out this stuff from the first 2 volumes of skateboarder magazine (1965 and 1975)
thus when I do either one you can see a bit of the other bleeding through. I like to do skate type tricks on my skis and when I skate I’m always tryna flow like I’m on skis.

what a great post. sweet photos and important point about hot dogging. makes people that shit on the bunch look kind of stupid.
re OP: people who are interested in flying and tricking are gonna try to do that in as many forms as possible (skating, skiing, etc.). time will tell if the people you are referring to turn into lifelong skateboarders. either way, it's whatever. i think most skaters get hyped on seeing people learning to skate, there's not much gatekeeping in the skate community in that respect.
Right now against the backdrop of crazy wealth inequality being core is directly related to seeming poor and working class. Skateboarding will always be more core and have better culture than skiing because its more accessible. To ski you need to be financially comfortable and also live near mountains with snow. Skateboarding you just need to buy a board

This is the root of it all.. skiings inaccessibility will always delegitimize efforts to make the sport seem holistic/core on a larger scale. It seems that we all have a subconscious radar for what seems genuine. Same reason goes for soccers long-standing success I imagine

People that don't ski or skateboard literally do not care nor think its cool that you ski/skateboard
