Just got a 920 on the psat 10. Going into junior year now and might be fucked if I wanna go out of state. Who else in the same situation

You’ll be fine dawg. As someone who didn’t to super well on the psat, I did some studying and turned around and got a 31 on the act somehow. So much of school is learning to play the system, you don’t necessarily have to be a genius to do well.

You're all good bro, psat doesn't matter nearly as much as ACT or SAT. There even seems to be a trend forming of some colleges not requiring standardized testing scores at all.

if your goal is to go to college go to community college and pay a hell of a lot less for your general credits. At that point any college you transfer to is only going to look at your college gpa - they don’t really care about the rest.


Colleges also don’t focus in on test scores that much unless you’re going into the ivy leagues. They’ll look at your application more holistically and factor in extracurriculars, grade progression (for example did your grades steadily increase, decrease, stay the same throughout high school) and any other circumstances that are relevant. Don’t stress too much bud. Your SAT isn’t the end all be all to your education.

Keep that GPA high if you're set on getting into a stricter school. PSAT isn't going to matter much. If you have a compelling essay, good GPA, and some well-rounded extracurriculars, you can get into 90% of colleges. Don't sweat it!

Normalize kids not paying into overpriced cookie cutter institutions if school isn't for them. Seriously. Unless they have mommy daddy money to burn or enjoy $60,000+ worth of debt at 22, college is a huge scam for most.

College is a scam if you decide to not learn anything and don't apply yourself towards a career.

But for the most part I agree that college isn't for everyone and we as a society should stop pressuring people into going to college.

Yea construction is a hella good ski bum job that pays damm pretty good (I do concrete) , but not everyone wants to be a framer for the rest of their lives.
And that's a bad take on testing, high school test scores don't mean shit about how well you will do in actual college classes you care about.

Unfortunately a ton of kids go to school because of societal pressure and end up setting loose goals in fields they are not passionate about.

You can't rent a car till you're 25 but you're expected to have your whole life and career laid out by 18.

We need to stop writing diploma mills these blank ass checks and act like it's doing anything to develop young adult's lives.

Of course, if you're passionate about a field of study go for it by any means possible. It just really doesn't seem like OP is that kinda guy.

Idk if there's any majors where you can just take the classes you care about. Standardized testing is trash but that's what you have to deal with in mainstream institutions.

But also it's a good indicator that if you get below the national average on SAT's college exams will kick your ass.

I'm not saying this kid shouldn't follow his dream and do what he wants. I am saying that if his dream is school he should get better at it ASAP, but I don't think it is. Correct me if I'm wrong OP

Op I got a 19 my first time I took the ACT and when I took the PSAT I showed up stoned and forgot a calculator (wicked embarrassing still to this day) ... but I got into school just fine (helps though if you have extra curricular’s and stuff). I used to joke that while other kids were getting college brochures I was getting army applications.

point is, don’t let one bad score get you down, study and retake it. Or don’t and join the army

dw sport, the world is moving to test optional. Just keep your grades up and don't make standardized testing a huge headache but still put some time into it and you'll be fine.

this is not bad advice but just be aware that most trades WILL fuck your body up, have some sort of a plan to move into management or just constantly be learning so you can start your own business or move your skills to a less labor intensive field at some point

Join the military. Do your 3.5-4 years. Get free college. Or get an apprenticeship and learn a useful trade that will pay more than something you can do with your liberal arts degree that cost you 70k.

I mean, I would agree that college is a scam...but the ACT and SAT are scams as well. I have a couple of close friends that scored low on both, went to an engineering college, and something clicked. They graduated with good grades, and amazing industry jobs that are going to allow them to get rid of their debt before the grace period even ends on their loans.

It really comes down to the individual, the college, the degree and so on. Some people with low sat scores might make great engineers and love what they do. Working the trades probably isn't their speed. There are some people with great test scores that are much better suited for a trade job.

The focus needs to be on presenting trade jobs and college degrees as equally important. The current, commonly held but not necessarily true view, is that college has a better ROI. Which is not true for many, and for many people trades will not have the ROI they want either.

So we shouldn't be telling people "if you score this go to college, if you score that than you should go work construction" or "going to college will solve your problems". Both have their negatives and positives, and those might be different for different people. What should be done is that those negatives and positives should be made more obvious in the years between 16 and 18.

The 17 year old who spends all day on his computer might have shit grades in highschool, but he may be much better suited to become a dev, or comp eng, than a plumber.

Also, test scores are stupid, I'd worry more about getting good scores for scholarships than getting good scores to get in.

2. You can live at home for those 2 years, saving tons of money
3. The education you will get at many CC's for gen ed classes will be just as good, if not better than your gen ed classes at a 4 year
4. If you start CC in highschool, many highschools have programs that allow you to go for FREE.
5. You are able to decide if college is for you, before you have invested 30k
6. Many 4 years have amazing scholarships for people transferring from 2 year CC's

The issue with cc is that if you do any sort of degree worthwhile your credits don't transfer and realistically you can only take like 15crs if your in difficult stem fields which is the only reason you bother going to college. Once your past gen eds and a couple other low level classes with any major your capped out. And if you wait past your freshmen year there's tons of classes you miss and end up repeating years which is worthless waste of time. The 2 years of each is not really valid anymore especially stem fields and it never eally was.
