I have once again changed my Major

HypeBeastOnly advice is do something you will love to do when you graduate. Don't focus on speed to graduate. Don't focus on what major will make you the most money. Think about could you do this every day and enjoy doing it? What things do you want out of your career? Will you still be able to do things you like after graduation (e.g. skiing)?

For me, I had no opportunity to change majors unless I wanted to graduate with more loans and a lesser paying job unable to pay those loans off. I entered a direct program straight out of high school which has its pros but definitely cons too. Don't get me wrong; I love my job and employer but if I could go back, I would totally take a different career path, perhaps something outdoor focused or even something more advanced. But it all worked out; I've got plenty of money and time off to do things I like outside of work.


BTW your major sounds pretty cool.

CrunnchyVanManSup homies, This is like my 4th change and i'm in something i'm finally stoked on. I went from Radiology when I first started school, then Environmental Science, then Environmental Ethics/Philosophy, and Now I am a Forestry/Natural Resource Education Major. Changed because if I continued down the Ethics path towards education I would have at least 4 more years cuz I would have to double major, but with the forestry I have a straight 3 years with a clear and direct path ahead of me, which sounds way less stressful than messing around all over the philosophy board. Also more opportunities for summer internships and fun stuff like that at my school's forest retreat. Stoked to be in something more science based again cuz I miss that.



Any of ya'll gone through changes of major?

LonelyCame to college as a biomedical engineer, switched to forestry. Worked through my shit, graduated in 4 years, and now I'm gonna be making between 40-70k a year, with benefits, using AutoCAD and GIS software to map new fiber routes and projects around the country. Not trying to brag, but at the same time, I never would have thought this good stuff would have been possible if you asked me 3 months ago.

Forestry and Geospatial have such broad applications that I think it is a solid choice for anyone who likes science. My larger point is that with forestry you could work a job in an office if that's your thing, or you could work all day outside if that's your thing. There is a huge diversity of jobs within that degree.

CrunnchyVanManI love the yoop, I honestly might move up to marquette or Houghton once I finish school. I love the mountains and western livin but it’s too damn expensive and crowded in CO anymore. You really can’t beat the good outdoor livin with the fairly low cost of living.

LonelyYeah I mean, I'm living in a huge place with 1 other person. The rent is 350 a month. I can still surf, ski, bike, and skate within 10 minutes of my house. Can't complain about that. You still get the mountain in Houghton...they are just mini mountains. If you ever are skiing up near boho again let me know. I'll show you the secret pillow lines a few miles away that rival anything out west.

mikemacAlso the cool thing with forestry (even though it sounds like your emphasis is on education) is that you can actually get involved in the daily operational issues that face our public lands.... have lots of friends out west who work for the forests and the fisheries and its pretty cool.

managing that stuff REALLY matters in terms of our land use and who gets to take what, how much, as well as corporate access to our natural resources.
