What is your relationship with injuries?

I read very often here on ns of a lot of people who got very badly hurt in the park.
i'm always terrified by the idea of injure myself in a bad way whan trying to learn a trick, even an easy one: broken bones, ligament tears and injuries in general are my biggest fear. so very often i end up asking myself the question: is it really worth it? risking maybe of be permanently injured?
probably i'm just a pus because unfortunately i live in a city far from ski resorts so when i'm lucky i go skiing 10 days a year. this means that i have very few days to learn tricks and get familiar with the park and jumps so i'm always unsure of trying them..

but i'm curious, what is your relationship with injuries and risk? what is the thing that makes you say: it's worth it, let's send it?

I have great relationship with injuries. The worst I ever injured myself was pulling a muscle in my back while tomahawking down a groomer. That happened like a week ago. Just commit fully and you'll be totally fine. And for the record I also live far away from ski resorts (3.5 hours w/o traffic) so I know how you feel. You just gotta do it tho man, you'll regret it if you don't.

I've never gotten that hurt in the park. Pretty much all of my injuries have been off booters, out of bounds on rocks or catching an edge on groomers... I feel like I'm more prepared to eat shit in the park and don't get caught off guard enough to let a nasty slam happen.

My risk tolerance is a process where I consider what my chances of success are, how I'm feeling on the day, and how bad the consequences are in the worst case. I try and give myself a good chance at success, around 70% and not do tricks way out of what I've tried before. If the conditions like powder or spring slush decrease my odds of getting seriously hurt then I'll send a bit more with my chance at success going down.

My progression isn't super fast this way but I haven't had many injuries. I've done my knee once now and rehab is a hard process. Injuries are just part of the game unfortunately if youre going to ski hard for years. You can help yourself out by getting your body strong and reducing risk but theyre always lurking. All about how driven you are to send and get good which everyone is different with

If you're new to the park, definitely get started. Obviously crazy flukes can happen while doing something of any difficulty (even just skiing a groomer), but the odds of getting a serious/permanent injury on small features you'll be using to learn is pretty low.

The biggest thing is not to be afraid of falling/bruising. My sister has claimed she's wanted to learn park a few times but can't really commit because she's afraid to take a slam or two and get bruised up. That's going to happen a whole lot, but the payoff from getting stoked about the park/learning new shit far exceeds the damage. As you learn to fall, you'll find that most falls aren't going to result in much other than a couple of bruises!

In terms of my personal experiences, I've had a couple of sprains but never anything bad. I'm a pretty average park skier. I can spin off/switch up on of most rails, do 3's with a few grabs, and do some wonky 5's. I've gotten to this point without much damage to speak of, so imo it's time to send it!

i've never had any serious injuries with skiing ever but recently I fractured my thumb which wasn't so bad. Also its fine to be scared when learning new tricks, I'm fairly new to skiing started this season and I learned 360's rail 270's and 540's and I didn't have much fear because to me, getting injured is just part of learning in the park.

seems to me most people get hurt when theyre trying to do some crazy trick when the conditions are sketch, usually early season. If conditions are shit don't pressure yourself to send it

Injuries are not a question of if they are a question of when. Everyone pays their dues at some point. Some pay a little, some pay a lot. It’s just part of the sport. You can do a lot to prevent them such as stretching or knowing your limits. I’m at an age now where I rarely try to actively progress and learn new tricks. I just cruise and relearn old tricks that I want back.

It really depends on your relationship with the sport and how badly you want it because lemme tell you.... you will get hurt.

if your a weekend warrior and only get 10 days a year then yeah maybe park skiing/tricks isn’t worth it... but if in those ten days a year trying something new lights your soul on fire, then maybe it is worth it!!

cuz lemme tell you, first time I tried to step onto a box I broke both thumbs and a wrist.... but that just pissed me off and made me want it more. The first time i tried the big jump at like 12 years old I overshot and broke my tailbone... but that just pissed me off and made me want it more.

my senior year in high school I tore my acl coming up short on a straight air after getting caught by a sketchy wind blast... but that just pissed me off and made me want it even more.

almost all of my progression came AFTER those injuries, then in college I broke 4 ribs taco-ing a rail after catching an edge throwing a 2 on in a rail jam.

then at 24 i overshot a backie on a Natty hit by about 50 feet and I broke 4 vertebrae, my femur, tibia, torn meniscus, fractured hip socket torn hip labrum.... but that just pissed me off and made me want redemption more than ever.... ended up getting in the best shape of my life in the 3 years following that crash and accomplishing some of my biggest goals and doing my best skiing of all time after a crash that I thought had ruined my Freeride career.

then, March 5th 2021 at the ripe old age of 28 I got sloppy and caught my inside edge doing a front 4 out and tore my ACL for the second time. But lemme tell you something.... I’m more pissed off than ever and I want it more than ever and I’m gonna fight harder than ever to get back in the best shape of my life and I know without a shadow of a doubt that some of my best skiing still lies ahead of me.... and probably some of my worst injuries yet are still waiting for me..... but I’m just not over it and Never will be.

Maybe I should give up? Maybe I’m just not that good? But i don’t do it for anybody else i do it because of how it makes me feel. Flowing through the park, airing off cliffs, skiing at 70 miles per hour makes me feel like a king, it’s a sensation nothing else can provide. No girl, no drug, no party, no amount of money, no amount of professional or academic success even comes close. So to me it is worth it... it’s truly one of the the only things that makes life worth living for me....

So the question remains..... how bad do you want it??
the age old saying no guts no glory.... and to the Victor go the spoils. But no conquering warrior has ever achieved greatness without shedding his own blood... how much are you willing to shed??

I would call it a synergy relationship.
Pushing yourself goes with taking the hard hits. The secret for skiing a long time is slow progression. Master the basics and slowly work your way up. Bumps and bruises are part of the game.
Look in the biggest context; the joy I get from skiing is worth dying for. Its pulled out of depression, it built character, I can face my fears much better because of skiing. Out in the alpine, I look around and feel an inner peace. Its the same inner peace I had when backflipping off a 50’ cliff for the first time.

When it does go wrong and you get a season ender, you rewatch your videos, make edits and try to relive the best times. These experiences get burned into your mind for the rest of your life.

I always was amazed at how mountain bikers try to drop cliffs and shit, almost the same size as the shit skiers hit, except falling on rocks is about 5000x the impact of falling into powder or even semi packed snow. No wonder bikers wear moto pads and shit but still. Thank God i chose skiing, the action sports equivalent of a gaping vagina

Yea it's more risky in general. I personally feel more comfortable doing jumps and drops on my bike than on my skis, but again, I spend if I'm lucky 15 days a year skiing vs at least 2 times a week on my mtb.

Blew a knee and mostly quit skiing for ~20 years; started again and fell back in love with it, went to a freestyle camp which made me super stoked, broke humerus, detached bicep, tore rotator at said camp... trained like crazy, then tore right shoulder on something stupid, then broke collarbone this season on a green practicing spins at a higher speed than made sense https://youtu.be/J03d7JLtyIk?t=160. I'm mildly depressed and healing up but I imagine the stoke will be back :). Sedentary healing time bums me out.

Every couple years they fuck me in the ass and leave me emotionally damaged until I finally start to return to normal then they hit me up and BAM before I know it they're back with their huge meaty cock in my ass putting me out of commission usually for at least 3 months

Well it was really just one time but it was 9 days of excrement spanning 12 consistencies and 53 minutes. It technically wasn’t 2 separate poops, but definitely more than 1.

UPDATE: I drank a whole pot of coffee, a banana, half a pineapple and a 32oz Gatorade and I just pooped like a real boi!
