Edges this thin normal on new skis?

I'm coming from the snowboarding world to skiing. I bought 2021 Nordica Enforcer 104, and the edges are very thin but only in a few spots. Check the right side edge in those photos. Is this normal in the ski world?

Skis have thin edges. ON3P claims to have some of the thickest edges in the industry, and they measure only 2.5mm x 2.5mm

A high-volume brand like Nordica will typically have cheaper construction and thinner edges. Your pic looks standard to me

There were custom ON3P woodsman 108 192 skis for sale for 650, I god damn knew I should've went with those instead of the EURO bullshit... And i'm european too

If it's any consolation, you'll destroy the bases just as fast as you'll destroy the edges. Unless you ride a lot of rails or frequently have very, very hard impacts, your edges will hold up just fine. Skis are tools that get worn with age.

That being said, I would've copped those woodsmans. That ski rips

Wait are the edges thinner in some spots on the skis? Or the same thickness along the entire ski?

So i took some better photos with measurements.

You can see the edge is almost twice as thick on the other ski in the exact same spot in one of the photos on the sidewall. Only 1mm thickness on sidewall leaves very little room for regrinds, doesn't it?

Also, on some spots the edge is 1.5mm on the base and on another spot, it's only 1mm.

These are brand new skis I just got in the mail today. I was just looking them over and my eye noticed the obvious difference.

OP trust ur gut and return or exchange them. I had an issue with some skis i got at the beginning of the season. The rocker profile of the two skis in the pair just didnt match. Realistically, its probably not something that is going to be noticeable...but if it is noticeable for some reason down the line, youre gunna kick yourself for not having done aynthing about it. Also, since you think something is off, no matter what, its going to be in the back of your head the whole time you have those skis.

I can still return these skis I think, the shitty thing is the Woodsman 108 seems sold out everywhere in 192cm. I'm 6'6" 225lbs morning weight, so I assume I would need the 192's. Also, I was really excited to get my bindings mounted and start skiing this weekend after a 17 year break :-(

Skis have tiny grooves in the base to prevent suction. Wax probably won't hold to the grooves in metal and certainly won't hold to a polished base. Best option I see is to weld some thick ass steel to the rest of the edge under foot. I say someone make a plastic ski with a carbon insert for rigidity. Recycle the plastic when worn out, swap in carbon insert to new ski. Plastic base can be the same material as the rest of the ski, edges molded into the plastic.

They don't need to. The only core shot I got in 3 years was about an inch long. I've ridden across rock faces, landed on rock patches, caught fallen trees/roots under snow, slid over concrete, etc and the inch long core shot was from landing directly on a small exposed rock directly underfoot. Sure there's plenty of scratching, but nothing significant.

OP: you should definitely return those skis. I know it sucks you have to wait that much longer, but it'll suck even more to have issues with your gear.

No. Impossible. Can't be done. Maybe you can pre wax the snow so that your bases don't need wax.

I was just looking at my broken Kartel by peeling back the topsheet (could only get it maybe 2 mm)



It seems like everything is intact, except the bamboo inside. Should I try to learn how to mount new pivots on them, ski a few spring days, and run the risk of another crash? Or just saw them in half to see the inside?

Also, for a one ski to do it all, no rails just charging around and cliffs and side hits and mobbing the mountain at Tahoe (squaw/alpine), is the woodsman 108 or 102 the move? Do I need a 192 at 6’6” 225lbs?

Likely happened at the factory. My guess is the base on your one ski wasn't flat and they've ground it down until it was. Which left you with not only thin edges but thin base as well. Same with the side edge, they've tried to make them a clean smooth edge and ground away too much material in the process.

As you mentioned, you wont have much material left to tune the skis. The thin bases will make for easier core shots, and thin edges will crack easier.

Nordica usually builds a pretty decent ski, this should have been picked up on in quality control.

Return / Exchange shouldn't be an issue from a decent shop. Just include those pictures.

If you could get on3ps for 400-500$ id be less skeptical of their business strategy.

So to update this, I reached out to Nordica and they told me to just ski the skis and then at the end of season I can return them or exchange them for 2022 pair once they have them in stock.

Was pretty pissed with the ordeal initially but they handled it very well so hats off to them. Might return them at end of season and still buy some ON3p's next year but idk yet.

that's a pretty sick setup actually. you're covered in case something does go tits up, but you also don't have to ship them away now and get new ones, mount them, blah blah blah

also respect for updating the thread, it's so nice if you're looking at an old thread about something you want an answer on and the OP comes back to share the resolution so it's there to read
