Anybody know what sort of bionic shit is going on with the plastic edge on the tips and tails of bent chetler 100s?
I own a pair and the plastic tips and ends hold up really well surprisingly, my ON3P Jeffrey's also dont have edge around the tip and tail so i wonder if they use the same plastic as the bc100. Lots of other ski brands also do this on certain skis off the top of my head i think the elan ripstick, some black crows and i few Rossingols im pretty sure.
DolansLebensraumIts like some sort of rock hard plastic. I assume its so you are leess prone to catching an edge on the tips or tails of the ski.
but it looks pretty interesting.

I want to say it was called Horizon Tech tip/tail and it’s designed like the hull of a boat to help float in powder. It was introduced back in 2014/2015? On the original BentChetlers (120 underfoot). Also, since the metal edges don’t go all the way to the tip (kinda like ON3P’s Kartel) you won’t catch an edge on the tip or tail. At least I didn’t - I’ve noticed it since switching from the 120 Chetlers to a 102 Reckoner.
Bentchetler apparently got the idea from surfing and they’ve introduced it to other skis now, like the backland (if I remember correctly). There’s another company that does it too but I can’t remember who it is
SessionVery few skis have a core that runs all the way to the tip. It's basically plastic fill material. Did you just realize Atomic does this?
Wood goes into the tip, but not full width. This is an exploded view of one of the new Maverick skis, but how the wood extends into the tip is the same as the Bentchetler 100
Mtuhockey33Except Atomic is the only (in my experience) ski brand to have this type of a beveled tip. The sides of the tip are rockered so it looks like this \_/
I know, I own them. They look pretty cool but I'm also sceptical of atomic's claim that it gives 10% more float or whatever but I haven't skied any other 100 waisted skis in knee deep stuff before so idk. Imo, no amount of tip and tail engineering is gonna make a 100 waisted ski float better, but I can see it maybe working for the 120s.

Atomic is definitely the first brand to put the beveled tip on skinnier skis and also sell a ton of them, but DPS has been doing the beveled tip for a long time with their spoons. That being said, nobody buys dps spoons and everyone buys bent chets 100 and 120

I have some 15/16 chetlers, the extra float is marketing talk, but it does make it stupid easy to pivot in deep snow

Yh I thought as much, didn't think about it increasing manoeuvrability tho. Dolan's probably on to something about the lack of edge making it less likely to catch in powder

I knew that the wood core layer cuts off before the tip and tail but i thought some of the laminate layers went all the way to the tip and tail so there is enough strength. I dont know if the plastic flanges are fiber reinforced plastic or what but they seem pretty solid

JJs also have Armada's "Smear Tech" which is the same thing
I actually have a pair, the tip is made of a sophisticated whale foreskin-eagle scalp composite that has been marinated in moose semen to lubricate it and make it have a more efficient glide. overall I'm a big fan of it and think it's a really cool idea but saying it gives 10 percent more float is def just marketing.
It might have been Line 3D Convex technology I’m thinking of. I want to say it was elan though but I can’t remember.

snowboarding had also been doing it for a while before as well. I like it on my boards for butters and stuff. Never tried skis with it though.
