Newb here, how do I get better at skiing fast?

Hello NS community! Im trying to get better at skiing and admittedly I am a newb. I basically just go down slopes and let jesus take the wheel, I have absolutely no technique.

What I've found is that I can't handle speed. I start goin down a steep run (blue) and I just end up going all the way left and right on the slope just trying to control my speed, and it's not fun. What can I do to allow myself to go fast, but still maintain control and not buckle? I mean I've skied in Colorado and Vermont and over time I can comfortably hit most of the blues, but I plateau hard. I cant to that next level. Any suggestions? If you need more info just say so again im new (I researched some too but I just want to hear some direct advice)

At this point id really appreciate any info/tips on the actual skis im renting. It doesnt seem like anyone who's commented so far has any info on the specific ones I mentioned, which is fine. I think im definitely gonna rent some longer ones, the short basic rentals always seem a bit unstable to me especially on more difficult terrain. Im about 170cm tall so would 160cm be a good length for my skill level?

Get some lessons!! And have someone video you so you can see what you’re doing!:)

Practice tons of turns. Lots an lots until you can link turns for miles and miles on mello slopes and then do the same think on steeper and steeper terrain. This kinda sucks to do when you are starting because it takes work and isn’t as fast but you need to get your strength up

keeyz1728-2Dude this is awesome! I think the upper-lower body separation is key to my improvement. I tend to lean into the slope when I'm turning it makes me basically spin out of control (end up turning too far upslope). Staying centered and making sure to lean forward and down the slope using my shoulders to guide me I think will help me a lot. I will also definitely be trying out the one-ski drill and looking up more videos of how to do that one, it seems super helpful in improving the areas where im lacking.

Like everyone has said, work on your turning technique. Once you got that down, there's two things you can do to start skiing faster once you have the form right. You can get longer skis and strengthen your legs. Definitely recommend doing squats and other leg workouts when you're not skiing. Leg strength is so important when you're flying down runs hitting bumps and stuff cuz you'll be better at reacting quickly to those changes in terrain

If you're looking at skis, consider something a bit below 100mm underfoot. This is the average width of people's feet so it feels more natural to ski than something super narrow.
