Let’s make NS popular again

How can we get this site to have more active users and more frequent posts? I miss the days where there were several hundred people online at once and I know you all do too. Throw some suggestions around to make the site more popular again but without making it so popular we get overloaded with kooks. I know the app could use some updates and I also know that the funding for this site is unfortunately lacking. I just want to see this community grow a little and be more popular among fellow shredders.

P.s. I know this thread belongs in site discussion but I’m posting here because there is a lot more activity here

Thats dope, I've actually done a few days on one plank too this year! Tangle got me so hyped on snowboarding this season. Desiree Melancon is so fucking dope. Any chance we're getting an ON3P board with that sexy green base? jk (...but it would be sick)

I know there are many members already on here that are boarders not skiers (shout out @theabortionator) , but I'm saying the easiest way to grow the site would be to start directly including boarding content. Not saying this SHOULD happen, but just for the sake of conversation about how to grow the site, I think this is pretty obviously the easiest way to grow.

Has Newschoolers ever sponsored a skier?

You could even turn it into a community thing sort of like Member of the Month except its for a rider. We can crowdsource some money to give them a little bread/make it worth it for them or even vote on which rider to sponsor each year.

I know I'd be more hyped on a contest rider or some X-Games skier if they had a Newschoolers sticker slapped on their helmet. Then when some kid at home sees it on TV and googles "Newschoolers" they're more likely to come to the site than the Instagram page?

I guess the real question is what attracts advertisers the most and what drives the bottom line. Because the more money that gets brought in the more flexibility is available.

Dont know if this has been touched on before in this thread but it might be cool to see them sponsoring and having a hand in more competions and such, not big ones like xgames necessarily but it would be nice to see there name on local rail jams and film stuff more.

explain? i love snow skating but don't understand the connection. do you just mean that people who wanna shred can snowskate instead of snowboarding for the sake of their knees since it's less intense or whatever?

I also think that as other posters have pointed out, newschoolers exclusive content would bring a lot of people here. I think that's also why we've seen so much traffic here lately. It doesn't have to be permanently newschoolers exlusive, but for the first 24 hours is a nice middle ground IMO. like with FORRGIVE, newest bunch movie, carnage movie, magma etc.

However on the negative side I think the forum layout is the reason it's not being used.
I will keep pointing it out, but there is a reason the forums on newschoolers have always been for the most addicted people only.

The parent comment and quoting in this forum is a fucking mess. Trying to keep track of the original discussion after a post derails into several topics is impossible.

A lot of people hate the point system of reddit, but its parent comment system is extremely efficient. You could introduce something similar, with hiding of parent / child comments, but without the voting system that discourages different opinions.

Why don't you just buy a mountain and name it Newschoolers but instead of having people buy tickets they have to have an account. The increase in site traffic would offset the mountain operating costs with that sweet sweet ad revenue. God it's like nobody understands business these days.

Im being serious when I say this, my friend introduced me to newschoolers as a way to read about skiing stuff in school right? Almost a year later and I mention something I read in a forum to him and he ask me this " whats a forum" He has been on here for almost a year and never ventured to any forum pages lol

Ohh!! I didn't know you rode one! Very sweet!

But yeah if you have flexibility or joint pain that restricts you from snowboarding, because being in bindings all day causes you pain, snowskating is the way to go. Easier on the body, especially the knees.

The "core" scene is basically just old dudes that aged out of snowboarding and into snowskating.

How much would it cost to get a contest-pro to put a Newschoolers sticker on their helmet? Is this something that could feasibly be crowd-funded? Honestly curious is this is something ya'll have explored because it seems like it would be a naturally symbiotic relationship?

I would think there has been quite an uptick with everyone stuck @ home spending more time on their phones.... after so long people get bored of their ig feeds and tune back into NS to get something fresh.

Overall and for the foreseeable future I think getting more original content is going to be key to increasing site traffic / meaningful interaction. Personally I would like to see more narrative / storytelling type content on here. I think what cy has done is phenomenal and would love to see more in that regard.
The one thing that plagues NS is repeat content typically in the form of complaining / bitching about how some goon @ the hill wrecked someone's day or nearly hit someone's kid or how covid masks are dumb or whatever. That content gets absolutely blown up in the comments and often times is just endless bickering. Clearly that problem is not on NS to fix, but I think having more original or narrative based content would help to fill the site with more worthwhile traffic.

I think @eheath is spot on and ahead of the curve about staying true to the forum style platform. Forum style platforms are going to make a tremendous comeback when social media dies, and I think in our current environment social media is dying more everyday.

I would love to see more NS interaction with small time ski hills / resorts though and maybe its just not attainable in a sport so driven by profit. I think everyone is well aware that there is no to little money in skiing and I would think if NS had coffers filled with money they would have already done alot of the outreach / improvements that has been suggested. I think crowdfunded jams might be the way to go. I would love to see parties at small time hills with the NS badge posted on the soccer mom pop up tents.

Realistically that would cost probably $5k, every athlete is different, but I talked to many athletes about this exact topic, the range was $2-10k and some said not for sale, etc.

In the end, anything more than $1000 would not be worth having a sticker on the helmet of one skier. This might get someone to go "whats newschoolers?" but there is no ROI on that. The way that NS operates is very lean, down and dirty, the parent company is constantly cutting costs (on all brands) and the only way NS could get "more" money for anything, NS would have to be generating more revenue than previous years at a significant pace.

If NS were more independent and 100% of ad revenue was being returned to NS, you could possibility argue the value of a sticker on the helmet of a significant skier, everyone assumes this but NS and the people that work for it don't have a ton of control over the budget. Hope this clears some things up.

Yeah I mean that space is valuable, usually you only see stickers of big sponsors on skis/helmets, so if you take that into account, it could be worth even more...

I absolutely love the forums. I'm older too and have spent many years reading discussion forums in my other and past hobbies. I still have at least 5 of them bookmarked on the computer. I've learned so much using this type of platform. Ig has its place, but god the advertisements after every 3rd post and story are getting ridiculous and distracting!

I’m 14 and convinced 2 friends to make ns accounts and try to actually post. I got an account thanks to my friend Jack. Trying to be active in forums and stuff I actually like NS better than ig for the most part. It’s not an overwhelming amount of content just shoved in your face.

My gf was telling me the other night that shes never met another person who just "browses the internet". somehow our gen grew up on the internet and still manages to be ignorant of so much about it. its as if the idea is that the internet is just for getting instant satisfaction(socials, looking up pieces of information), and not a place where actual meaningful content exists
