Thoughts on touring mod for Full Tilts?

A little background first then to the possible mod I want to make. I’ve been doing some touring mainly as a good work out because fuck running. All in the Mid East at the resort (mostly groomed normal trails). I’m using Daymakers and my Full Tilt FC10s. Not the most ideal set up but I’m not doing super long back country tours. I will eventually get a hybrid boot with tech fittings but probably not until next year when it makes sense.


So here is my idea, I have a few extra tongues laying around and to get more range of motion from my boot I was thinking about taking a set of extra tongues and cutting the top off. I want to retain some heel hold to prevent blisters and comfort. Main drawback would be carrying an extra tongue in my pack for the downhill and swapping tongues at the top of the hill.

But I would get some extra range of motion to make longer strides which would be awesome. What’s everyone’s thoughts on this? Below is a pic where I think I should cut them (right above middle cable) but I might go lower.

Could you just take the tongue out completely and use the strap to hold the liner tight in the shell? That would be easier than having two different tongues to worry about

I could but the cable wouldn’t be tight enough to hold the liner in very well and the modded tongue should in theory allow me to loosely strap the middle buckles.

@patagonialuke taught me this but if you put your bottom buckle/wire over the tongue like normal, you can put the middle and upper buckles under the tongue, and loosely do the power strap over the tongue. That way, tongue stays in, you get good ROM, and don’t have to take them on/off

The liner will stay in fine with no tongue. You won't be able to crank your buckles down but honestly that shouldn't be an issue.

The old Dalbello Sherpa (my first touring boots) had an interesting tongue design that locked and unlocked 2/3 of the way up to allow increased rearward ROM without fully unbuckling the boot or removing the tongue. Doesn't necessarily help forward ROM which it looks like you're looking for, but it was an interesting system that worked reasonably well for what it was. Food for thought.
