My brothers old sub has a continuouse phase adjustment that goes between 0 and 180 degrees. Most people in various forums and articles say that if there are no other considerations, phase should be set at 0 degrees.
The problem is that on this subwoofer, it says “normal” next to the 90 degree location of the dial.
why would the company say 90 degrees is normal?

If a song has been professionally mixed/mastered, there should be no reason to change it.
If you start messing with the phase, certain frequencies will begin to get cancelled out. I guess the reason there is phase adjustment on a sub is so you can boost some of the low end frequencies and drop out some high/mid. But doing that could leave your sub sounding ‘muddy’.

I know in car audio we would flip the phase(180 degrees) by reversing the polarities on the subs depending on the enclosure to gain a little more bass for the customer during a comp. But mentioned above, if the music is recorded correctly there is no need to reverse the phases.
As for the 90 degrees on your sub up above, that will only make the speaker travel a very minimal distance making for a lack of good sound. What manufacturer is it?

Why dont you just put your sub in its usual spot then run a 40hz test tone and use an SPL meter at your couch and see if the phase shift changes the output at your position? Phase shifts are usually for if you have to put your sub in a weird spot with a lot of room interference and the phase can help balance it out a little.

I put the sub right next to my full range speaker so 0 hz is probably my best bet. I was just curious as to why the company would say 90 degree phase shift was normal. Maybe they expect you to hide the sub off in one corner like you said. Tnx for the input tho.
skiermanIt should be at zero unless you're listening to one of Hitler's speeches then 90 degrees is where you want it but I'm certain you already knew that.
