Currently using a full zip mountain hardware fleece mid-layer but I'm looking for something that does not have a turtle neck style neck. Almost like a crew fleece. Anyone have a good recommendation?

Is this because you end up with too many things that have turtleneck styles and it makes it hard to bend your neck? I have this problem as well, though this year I've gotten everything except my midlayer and shell to not have turtleneck so that might help.

Yeah my base layer is a tube neck so the neck is really long so that I’m able to pull my mask over it but it ends up being a lot with a mid layer on top of that.
Mons Royale Mountain Shirt or a decent insulator like the Planks Cloud 9 will work in nearly every situation when layered with a decent base and a shell.
For Japan in -15c I was using a Mons Merino / Armada synthetic baselayer, Armada Roady insulated midlayer, bibs and a shell jacket and was perfectly warm, on extra cold days like -29c I wore both baselayers

Honestly dude, this might sound dumb, but Amazon has a ton of very affordable dry-fit style mid-layers that are super comfy and keep me warm, but not overheated. I typically wear a top mid layer, maybe 2 if it is a cold pow day, a shirt over that, and a bottom mid-layer, similar to long johns but not cotton.
Check thrift stores. I'm always finding good mid and base layer stuff there cheap. No one wants it because it's not fashionable.
Icebreaker or Mons Royale might have what your looking for too.

i took NS's advice and got a Strafe Alpha Direct Insulator cuz i was in the market for something similar (haven't tried it out skiing seeing as I just got it in the mail yesterday) and it might be something you're looking for in terms of fit and style.
