A question for pro skiers only

For those of you that are pros, at what point can I start to tell people I am a pro skier? Once I get a sponcer does that make me a pro? Or does it have to do with making money on the sport, because in other sports you lose your amateur status once you get paid to do it. I plan on getting sponcered soon and I want to make sure I am saying the right things.

To me pro means profession, which is something you do for a living. So I guess when you are skiing as a profession.

In the sport of skiing there is a very grey area between Pro and Am. Unlike other sports we don't have teams, drafts, or a Tour.

The closest to our sport would be Golf, considering everyone is an independent contractor and you must win to make money doing it.

Salaries from companies to ski for them are more like endorsements and not working salaries like basketball players.

From what I have said above I believe you should be called a 'pro' when you compete in the 'pro' competitions like the X-games WSI and others.

you will know when you are a pro when you ski like Eric Pollard, Mick Nick, Dash Longe, Mike Wilson, Skogan Sprang, Tj schiller and Tanner Hall. Ski like them they should be your idols.

Pro is short for Proffessional (in case you ride the short bus to skool)... that means it is your proffession... means that is the principle thing you do to make a salary. a pro could be anything from an athlete to a ski instructor...

in my opinion being a pro is more than winning contests and getting paid to ski,
its acting like a profesional by leading the sport,
people like eric pollard, tanner hall(although some of his antics are stupid)
cr,jon olsson ect,
not just being good and getting paid

i agree on the fact that being pro is being paid by a company to ski for them or competeing in pro events. however, i doubt that all pro skiers are being paid enough just for skiing to make a living off of it. freeride skiing isnt like pro football or baseball where all players live off of playing. as in skateboarding or rollerblading many pros have side jobs or work other jobs within a sponsoring company because being pro alone does not pay enough to live off of. i also know that in some other sports winning an amatuer event qualifies you as pro and being able to compete in pro events.

I say it's when the media makes you into a pro.

Ski instructors are TECHNICALLY professional skiers.

Being a pro in the sense of the word that you want is when you're big and famous. It has to be legit too, it's not good enough to be sponsored by your buddies' new ski company, and in your friend's movie that he sells to the other kids at highschool.

When you're in a video that I can buy at any store in North America, and have an ad in a magazine, and every person on this site knows who you are, then maybe you're pro.

Until then, you're just another skier hoping to go pro.
