Salomon Shift/ Fischer Travers CS Compatibility Concerns

Titus69I’d suggest getting the rangers, cause you’ll actually be able to use them at resorts still. The travers is a solid boot but for the nerds who like to climb for hours to wiggle down a line, if you have a shift I assume you want to go faster and ski kinda hard, which with that boot I can’t imagine is as good as the ranger. Also if you had a shop mount them I assume they did a test on the bindings and said whether there’s issues or not.

SpadeBringsThanks for the reply and the helpful advice! I have a pair of Ranger's I used last winter that are a solid boot. Problem is they're only 100 flex and don't have dynafit inserts. I think it would make sense for me to get the new ranger 120's since they're a stiffer flex and are pin compatible. Thinking of it as more of a two birds with one stone type of deal.

Main reason as to why I was attracted to the shift's is their lateral toe release and capability to handle some resort riding. I'm thankful to have an all-mountain and powder quiver right now, so the touring setup would be for some pre-season skinning and occasionally hitting some bowls near Smuggler's Notch.

Haven't had a shop mount them yet, so that's definitely on the list next.

Titus69Ohh true, yeah best to wait til you know they’ll work or not, and yeah you’ll definitely want the 120 flex, might be even better with 130 if you’re over 140lbs. I started touring on daymakers and a 120 flex park boot but now im on a 130 flex (roxa r3) and are way better for charging, had shifts and can say they did good for going down, had my din around 9 I think and sometimes wouldn’t eject but in the cases they did were the times I was realllly glad they did.

I know others who have put the shifts through a lot and still use em but for me they lasted about 30 touring days, one of the toes did eventually stop locking in tour mode making them useless for uphill but believe that’s a thing Salomon warranties for I think, although haven’t heard back since I sent them in through a shop in March likely cause rona. Also witnessed a toe eject on a girl at a pond skim so be aware that abuse on em could brake them. If you have other skis for resorts and are only occasionally touring you’ll likely be fine though.

SpadeBringsRight on, fingers crossed the shifts perform well for me. I'd follow-up with the folks at Salomon; they have plenty of the shifts in stock and if you're lucky could send you a new pair in exchange for the warrantied ones.

Seems like these bindings are incredibly finicky; bunch of people had problems with accidentally engaging the brake while skinning. Based on what I've seen the brake is incredibly wide for its stated size - I ended up going with the 90mm brake on the 96 Hannibals and that's supposed to fit with plenty of room to spare.

I'll pull the trigger on the Ranger 120's right now, worst case scenario I'll just have a better resort boot and can sell the 100's to someone

Titus69Yeah definitely good to have a narrow brake on them, it’s truly a pain to deal with, also keep something with you incase of snow build up, maybe a brush for the toe piece when it gets ice in there and something to get snow out of the brake cause in tour mode it will collect snow and if it’s too clogged it won’t be easy to get into ski mode.

ThaLorax1. No, those will not work with an alpine toe piece like the Shift has for downhill mode. They'd be fine uphill, but not so much downhill.
2. The Travers has a different mold than the Ranger Free, which has a more narrow last. However, yes, the Ranger Free would work better for the Shift. The Ranger Free does have a fully moldable shell, while I believe that the Travers only has a semi-moldable liner. I haven't worked on/held the Travers in person yet, so I'm not 100% confident on that, though.
3. The TUV SUD certification is nothing more than a safety certification that has nothing to do with binding compatibility.
4. Personally, I would not put the shift on that ski. Are you planning on riding these in bounds much, or solely for backcountry/touring?
5. Personally, if the boot fits and you're not using this setup for in-bounds skiing, I'd return the Shifts and get a G3 Ion, Fritschi Vipec, or something similar

SpadeBringsThanks for all the super detailed info! The bindings are not mounted. I ended up getting rid of the travers boot and just had the ranger free delivered. I’ll be using the Hannibal’s predominantly in backcountry settings with some in-bounds dawn patrol at Stowe. I choose the shifts because of the lateral toe release, which I’m aware that Fritschi has on some models as well

ThaLoraxThe One? Ya, I've seen it. I'll have to try it, but it sounds like my instep is too tall for it.. I'd have to mold it so much that the plastic over the instep wouldn't seal closed...
