Please don't go ski Tucks

apparently tons of out of state people are sending it to tucks right now. Like many of you, I am still skiing, but I'm being super cautious, not skiing in any avalanche terrain, and staying as local as possible. I just found an abandoned logging road across the street from where I live and that's the only place I'm going to ski until it melts. Would I have rather gone to tucks yesterday? Obviously, but there is honestly no way to ski down the ravine that I would consider "low risk." In addition, Tucks attracts tons of kooks so even if you're being safe there's a good chance someone who has no business being up there falls above you, can't self arrest, and crashes into you. I've seen it happen multiple times there.

Go outside, be healthy, but stay local and don't send it!

I haven’t skied since the closures and don’t currently have a touring setup, but there’s no snow anywhere within 10 hours of Pittsburgh that’s able to be hiked and skied in any way so for some traveling is the only option, I’m still not going tho.

Is there nothing else to be skied in the tucks area other than the ravine? Is nothing “safe” rn?

All those points are mad true. Wanted to go Friday but avy danger was high and I also considered most the points you made and decided against. Instead stayed semi local and skinned Magic mountain with about 4 other people total on the mountain yesterday.

My hope is that this virus will have died down enough by late may and there's still enough snowpack then to ski at tucks. My worry is that if too many people ski it now they'll have to shut it down...

Can't believe how many people went up there yesterday, so dumb. I would love to have gone but can't justify driving up there.

Honestly though, the MWAC should just close the lot, stop posting updates and just shut it down. It's like they are shooting themselves in the foot.

Yesterday they posted something along these lines "Tomorrow is going to be great up there, please use good judgement and don't come."

This is their response - todays bulletin was the last for the next few weeks, and the entire Cutler River drainage (Tucks and Huntington) will be closed. They are also urging people not to ski in any of the more remote areas (King, etc) and limiting their response in rescue situations

I just went 2 days ago for the first time in 2.5 weeks. We've been over run woth bay are kooks but it's mellowed out. Still some avy danger but we kept it pretty conservative.

Def want to get out a bit more. But staying super local to home when I do

I'm a local (live like 10 min from the Tucks trailhead and ski there all the time) and I see both sides of this argument, which has gotten heated here in the past few days. On the one hand, I agree that people should not be driving long distances, potentially bringing the virus with them, and taking risks that could put rescuers at risk / tie up hospital beds. However, I think it is in theory very possible to ski in the backcountry, keep your distance and lower your risk tolerance, and not put yourself or others at undue risk of contracting covid-19. The problem with Tucks is that a) people are not following social distancing when they ski and b) it is a unique zone where all of the traditionally skied lines involve some level of risk, no matter your mindset, gear, or skill level.

I was up there yesterday. I parked in the far corner of the lot, at least 50 ft from any other cars, headed up the trail, and skied a line no one else was remotely close to. I had crampons and axe, locked my toes on the descent, and was extremely careful not to fall - though admittedly not more so than I normally am in no-fall zones. I don't regret going up, because nothing went wrong, but the problem was factors out of my control - namely the mountain and other people. People saw where I parked and nevertheless proceeded to park right next to me and stand 2 feet from me as I was booting up. They tried to chat or passed right past me on the skin track as I was taking a break. And although I felt I controlled the risk to the best of my ability, it would still totally possible that I could have caught an edge or slipped a crampon in the wrong spot. Add all that up and my decision to ski yesterday was an imperfect, fundamentally flawed form of social distancing.

That being said, I'm not going to stop skiing or tell others they can't. I feel locals here are latching onto covid-19 as a convenient reason to finally say publicly what they've always said behind closed doors - "fuck people from out of state, this is our mountain, they should stay away." All online, of course. People are going around the parking lot counting Mass plates and measuring the distance between people - really? A lot of those people have ski houses here and have paid taxes here for decades, and they should totally be able to weather out covid-19 here if they choose to. But if you're reading this and live a few hours away - maybe save the drive and ski closer to home. Bring the correct gear and keep risk low if you do come. Tucks has such a cult following for New England spring skiers, esp now that resorts are closed, that stopping people from coming just isn't going to happen. I just hope no one gets hurt or sick in the process.

Thanks for your response, having a local's perspective on this is super important. As I could've guessed, there are locals like you who aren't traveling and are being responsible out there, but y'all are outnumbered by the kooks by probably 10 to 1.

The only thing I really gotta disagree with is people traveling to their second homes to weather out the virus. Yes, they pay taxes, but I for one have an issue with rich folks traveling from cities, potentially spreading the virus to rural areas, just so they can be a bit more comfortable. I have a lot of friends who live on the coast in Maine and they have been seeing tons of out of state plates, most likely from people staying at their summer homes. It's a problem because if these people actually cared about the rural communities they own property in, they would stay away. That would be the best thing for the safety of the community. Rich people consume rural areas like its a commodity for them to buy, and no matter how much money they pay in taxes or visit the farmer's market in the summer, it's all of their own enjoyment and comfort, and not about being a part of the community. If it was, they would live there year-round!

I for sure see your point, and I think the user you're replying to was saying that there is a lot of animosity towards non-locals year-round, and now people are saying out loud (due to covid) what they've always been saying, which is that out-of-state plates don't belong. I go to school in central ME and ski tucks pretty frequently and haven't been home since December, but I've still got Mass plates (Berkshire county) on my truck. The fact of it is that its federal land, and its owned by citizens, which is what makes America great. That said, people certainly shouldn't be traveling far to ski right now

Lol I'm on the other side of this now. Switched my Maine plates over to Mass a few months ago and now whenever I go home I always get death glares on 95 haha. (To be fair, moving here has also made me a MUCH more aggressive driver haha)

As far as Tucks, I'm kinda of the opinion they should shut it down totally as much as that sucks for locals and people not abusing it. I think leaving it open signifies to people that "everything is fine" which...really isn't the case in our country right now. NH closed all of their beaches, and I know a few CO counties have restricted backcountry access so I could see it happening soon.

Literally FUCK COVID. I can't wait for this to be over

Fair point, thanks for your response to what I said about out-of-state people with houses here. I would say think about what you'd do if you were them. Skiing aside, imagine you lived in Manhattan with young kids. It's the point when NYC was going into full lock down, death panic mode about a week ago, with zero hospital beds. You have an empty house you own in the middle of the woods in NH, half a days drive away. You wouldn't go? I sure as hell would.

I'm not saying that's the most selfless thing to do. But it's reasonable, and people are going to look out for themselves and their family first right now. Rather than prioritizing abstract possibilities of spreading the virus through travel, I can't blame them for making the call some have made. If they drive directly up here, hand sanitize at gas stations and grocery stores, and social distance effectively, they shouldn't be a part of the problem.

....as long as they don't tomahawk down the headwall of Tucks. My dad is on the Mountain Search and Rescue team and it's going to be him, and my whole family by extension, who gets exposed if he has to rescue an asymptomatic carrier. They don't have masks and they're not going to social distance on a rescue. My grandparents have underlying conditions and are at high risk. So I don't take this lightly. But I'm also probably going to ski on Washington tomorrow, and be careful as fuck not to fuck up.

skiing should unfortunately be part of this list, too many idiots getting inured rn further clogging up our strained healthcare

go for a hike, without skis, close to home without traveling, and hope people get their shit together to not start to impact ski season 20/21d

I get it, this fucking sucks and we all want to ski, myself included, but social distancing and staying at home is the quickest we're going to get through this. If you're selfish and ignore it you're further setting things back for everyone, and at the pace we're on because people refuse to social distance, ski season 2020/2021 is going to be affected.... stay home for fucks sake

Sucks for the locals but whatever. I think they closed a bunch of the larking lots near the touring spots here in CA. Not really that bummed because I havent been going out really anyway. And the ridiculous traffic of people from the bay was too much.

They've also finally stopped airbnb in town and are doing some other things. Pretty shitty when locals are trying to shelter in place as they're supposed to, and everyone else is constantly coming through town like it's a vacation.

that fuck from NJ who needed SAR on Tucks is a great example, potentially spreading COVID to the responders all due to his "need" to ski. I hate it just as much as everyone else but seriously skiing is just not the right call right now

I will be hiking a mellow mountain (cause you need something that had snowmaking) with my board again tomorrow after doing it Thursday. I don’t care where you live hunting for good terrain is terrible right now.


Learn to snowboard if it’s too tame for you on skis.

You want non-essential businesses to re-open asap because the economy is more important than peoples lives? You want to ignore literally every guideline stated by the WHO/CDC due to continuing to cling to your “freedom” to carry on as if everything is normal, is again, more important than peoples lives??

Turn off Fox News and wake tf up, we are now at a US death toll of over half of 9/11 a day, and we still haven't hit peak. Think about that for a second. The south is about to get ravaged due to a massive population, and some leadership, that still unfortunately shares your mindset. If people don’t get their shit together we’re on track to lose almost 300k in the US. We are all in this together, I’m not saying it’s fun for anyone, it’s an unprecedented and difficult time and if you’re scared/frustrated enough to hurl insults at people trying to help then I’m truly sorry. I also understand everyone woke up to this at different times, myself included, but now in April 2020 if you look at all the info thats available, there is zero excuse to not take this seriously. I toured Iraq, the Philippines to name a few bud. I’m not saying families and soldiers don’t sacrifice. But we’re still here! Quit preaching. It’s not like it used to be in our grandfathers time, it’s a money making, raping pillaging, resource stealing world controlling system now.
My time and money goes to my family and the workers I support , who I’ve been supporting all winter without work with my $ , who I’m now allowing to work or stay home home paid cash + unemployment up to them.

I went to Sunapee. Maybe 20 cars in the lot good vibes flowing hiked 3 laps and barely saw anyone. Wish I could have gotten some lift served slush snowboard laps this spring. Skiing is just too easy unless your on difficult terrain which no one should be on RN when there isn’t a lift spinning anywhere on the planet for good cause.


Maybe a week left on the snowmaking trails I’d recommend it to anyone who needs turns. You can’t go further north and not be harassed thanks to too many Boomer Gravity Review dickheads Stowe closed uphill so everyone’s gotta close BC the overflow will be too much.
