so next year I’ll be done with college for the year within the first week of May, and I’m really tryna ski out at TLine for as long as I can. What’s the best option, living wise? Find someone to live with for a couple weeks? Live out of my car? Pay for a place?
someone who’s done this drop some good
options, really tryna do this too.
car camp to save skrilla, bring plenty of tarp and means to dry your gear. Spring is super moist. Airbnb between 3-4 people also can be relatively cheap if you got a bit more money
I was told the Palmer lift towers are damaged and all summer camps may be cancelled.
But if tline does open back up and offer access lower mountain the spring park on Norman is going off most of may till they move up to the mile which is still pretty fun.
Free camping is possible if you can find a clean spot away from people.Definitely bring some tarps to hide from the spring showers. I used to always stay at the trillium lake airstrip across the highway because it was close and free but it’s gotten pretty gross and a bit sketchy. There are still quite a bit of spots a bit further out towards some of the other lakes.
Keep in mind there are federal rangers that patrol and can be a bit strict. As long as you don’t leave a mess/move to a new spot every two weeks they will leave you alone.
Renting a spot is ideal. Finding a place in government camp would be nice. The scummit apartments is your best bet as far as location. There might be something else in town but you will have to be on it.
If you want to actually sleep and not live in a wook village there are some pretty snazzy rental opportunities in welches. That being said, the drive is going to be a bit longer and it’s going to be expensive. On the plus side welches has an actual grocery store. Your best bet would be to find some roommates
Hey bro.I went to Tline for the first time in late April last year and just slept in my car.
In early May most camp spots will likely still be closed but I found a perfect one kinda hidden out of the way from the main spots, just 10/15 mins down the road, past Govy towards Sandy and Portland. Had some nice benches for eating and chilling and right next to a stream for water (obviously just boil it before using for cooking). There's also some good mtb trails another 15 minutes down the road.
I was only there for 8 nights, but would've happily stayed longer if I'd had some of my own friends there. Just got a bit lonely after a while and I had other places to see on my roadtrip. I did end up hanging with a couple of guys at the campsite for a few nights, who actually turned out to be fcking good skiers. It's easy to make friends at Hood if you try, everyone is so damn chill cause they're all just stoked on skiing.
There are plently of airbnbs around (especially that time of year), I just booked one every 4 nights or so, just to freshen up and get an actual good night's sleep.
Btw, in late April/ May it can still drop to below freezing at night so make sure you bring some warm clothes or a decent sleeping bag. I completely fucked it and ended up sleeping in my ski jacket and thermals for 2 nights until I drove down to Portland to get some proper gear.
Maybe see you there next year!! I'm desperate to come back. Shoot me over any questions if you want.

weastcoastAlso what’s the best way to dry gear if you’re not staying inside an actual building every night ?
Assuming you’re living out of a car, either hit up a laundromat or just wait for it to be sunny and just let everything bake outside. Very difficult to dry out heavy ski layers that are completely soaked inside a vehicle.

Easy one. On the drive down from T-line hang em out the window (by trapping them with the window glass) and drive down as fast as fuck. You get some funny looks too so win win. Then just leave them in the sun afterwards. They'll be fine

If you need a place to stay or just want to hop in the shower PM me. Living in Portland and will be skiing every day I can in May up at T-line. Otherwise, camping is the move it seems like. I was going to do that this year until coronavirus since I don't have a house yet and I was just living on campus in Portland this year. But now school is online so I'm making my way back to MN.
weastcoastSide note I’ve never been to hood or the area at all so the more info the better.
Plenty of info on this as well. There are 3 resorts on Hood, Skibowl, Tline, and Meadows. Skibowl is sick but has a much shorter season because it is the lowest elevation. Meadows usually stays open until the first week of May and they also offer a Spring pass which I believe is only $100 if you're under 24. A great deal even if you can only ski there for a few days.
T-line spring pass goes until the end of May and then they offer there summer pass which is a lot more expensive, close to $1K now I believe. Summer season goes til mid August but you can hike up after that.
If you take the gravel roads down past trillium you can camp there, in fact there's an unofficial spot 2 of my buddies straight up lived in for over a month before they got jobs at Meadows. You could also try to find someone to rent a cabin with around Rhododendron or Brightwood or Government Camp. There's a bunch of old logging landings that you could live on in the forest, but dont take mine bc im gonna be living there to ride my dirt bike a lot in the summer.
Or do take my spot and then we can slam Busch Light together and talk about conspiracy theories

weastcoastI don’t disagree with you but I’m living at home for this time so I’ll be able to save some dough.
Definitely get a job then that wont be two demanding during the semester and either take classes over break and work more during the semester or work a lot during winter break.
