Is there nothing resorts can do to keep Jerry out of the park?

It's unreal. I won't even pretend to be a park skier. Rails and me got a divorce long ago and straight airing jumps and attempting 3's are about the only thing I'll do. Otherwise I stay out of the park.

I'm bringing this up because I'm riding the chairlift at 7 Springs watching whole families roll over the knuckles, stopping on landings, etc, in their LARGE FEATURE park and recording it.... Like what the fuck. There's plenty of other trails with similar slopes. You being complete fucking idiots puts you and others at risk, not to mention being an inconvenience.

Weeeeeeeeeee honey look Weeeeeeeeeee! Wow so sick. Did you see me hit that bump? I got like 6 inches of air Radical.

People love to sue. It's rare and refreshing when parents tell their kids to get out of the way etc. But they rarely take that responsibility.

I lowkey think this would be pretty effective

at the top of the big park

very small jump with a fence through the middle, but submerged so you can't hit the fence if you hit the jump

fence goes all the way around park

basically the only people that can get in the park are ppl who can sort of jump, which takes out jerry families who take selfies in landings.

I think it'd work

I think people need to learn personal judgment as beginner skiers. Like for real, you should know if you can’t hit a feature. I was at my local resort the other day and this girl multiple times went up the lip of the biggest jump, had nowhere near enough speed, and rolled backwards down the lip. Like come on

Yeah that’s true. I think a lot of people come in to the sport with high expectations. Plus anything freestyle is inherently “cool” so people flood to the park to try to prove themselves

I see that. What I’m saying is..does this picture not just fuel a kid’s misconception that the zones on either side of a rail are for jumpin’, hootin’ and hollerin’? The feature itself is self-sabotaging.

not sure if they still do it but stratton made you watch a video, and take a 5 or 10 question test for a pass to get into the park. they had somebody standing up top checking them too. Thats probably the only way to prevent it without hurting jerries feelings

Blue Mountain had this super steep up slope into the bigger park a long time ago. It was at the top after the lifts, so if you're too gaper to skate for some speed to get up it you weren't getting in. Unless you sidestepped which people are unwilling to do usually, and even then it was steep enough where gapers would fall over trying that. This had to be like 2012 or sometime around then. Maybe even earlier.

Glen eden (ontario) used to make you do this as well. Quick test, and $10 for a year long park pass. Was pretty dope. Got rid of it last year, and it sucked. With most of Brampton, Mississauga, and Toronto coming to ski there, it was fucking scary. Had too many close calls with jerries there. This year at Grand Targhee, at least 4 kooks have been seriously (helivaced out) on the big jumpline. Nothing wrong with the jumps, they are the same ones they build every year, they are just fucking big, with pretty steep landings. Park crew has been getting in shit for building these, but its really not their fault. Management just announced that we are joining the mountain collective, so they are probably going to tone down the park next year. Shit really sucks.

Where I work we can’t take ski school kids into the park unless they’re in freestyle, and park crew has signs up everywhere to not hit ramps unless you’re going to hit the feature but it’s all we can do. It sucks ass, and I’ve seen so many crashes because Jerry’s have no awareness and can’t wait at the top and end up snaking around everyone

that's back when stratton use to build parks worth riding. now they are garbage and stratton doesnt care. they just cater to the race program and jersey folks spending money. they even moved the park to sunbowl way over on big ben which is a pain to get to. it gets sun baked and the jumps are built terribly..

thats wild.. you'd think they would see the number of injuries sky rocket and go back to the test.

Resorts could put up cameras which show the jump landings and show it on some tv uphill. It wouldn't get rid of the Jerry's, but you could look and see if the landing was clear before you dropped in.

This is actually quite a funny bump. I was browsing resorts and noticed that Targhee joined the mountain collective but also their season pass offers a discounted "life flight network plan". Aka insurance to get medical heli out. Lmao wonder if there's a correlation? For me tho, my credit card covers up to $100k for medivac and regardless my health insurance would instantly hit the oop max so this is a stupid perk if you have either. Just thought it was funny to mention. If you get seriously fucked up in a ski resort, you're probably taking a heli to a trauma center. If you break your femur, getting a heli either from resort or from the community hospital. Basically anything but a minor injury in one of these ski towns is a ticket to a heli ride. Their threshold is very low these days.

This depends on the location. At one of the largest ski resorts in North America, the EMTs told me if a heli is called in it's because every minute counts: they think there's a serious risk of death, permanent brain damage, or paralysis. It's not something they call in for a broken femur.

Yeah I think it's largely subjective and based on the contracted medical flight company which is weird to say. What you say is largely the case but not always from what I've seen. A broken femur depending on location and severity of break is very dangerous d/t risk of severing an artery- but I've seen plenty of people flown in to my ED from scene runs and small town emergency rooms that certainly did not need to imo. Whenever we get a scene run via helicopter my heart skips a beat cuz I assume it's real bad, but not always.

are you going to pay to maintain those cameras? That costs money for very lil gain from a resorts perspective.. yes it is proactive to prevent accidents that then ski patrol would need to tend to but they are covered legally already by the sign that says to check your landing area before hitting.

It really wouldnt be that much compared to what they spend on upgrading and maintaining high speed chairs, cat ops, etc. Some shiny new tech would also probably draw more tourism (rich people are suckers for amenities)

Cameras are cheap and once setup should require very little maintenance. Vail does something like 2 billion in revenue each year with $700 million in EBITDA. Vail could afford this easily at their major resorts. I agree there is very little incentive for ski resorts to improve safety. There is some benefit in ski patrol needs to take less people off the hill. There's a more indirect benefit because if little Johnny gets hit in the landing zone, the Jerries decide skiing is too dangerous, and don't come back.

um no? How are they? Anyone can get down any run regardless of ability. It's just how they get down it that determines how good they are. If I am slowly scraping down and falling or stopping every 15 feet, I can still get down alright, but in what world is that classified as good riding?

Good luck talking your way out of the incident if you take out lil jerry and the camera caught it all on tape. I do agree, resorts can easily afford this but will they? nope. there is no incentive to do so. Ski at your own risk clause on the back of your lift ticket and a quick sign at the top of the terrain park covers them.
