Do you feel that your skis edges perform better/catch less after grinding down the edges with several tunes?

Brand new skis, even when fully waxed, always seem to feel like the edges are biting into the snow too hard. I like the feel of skis more after a few edge tunes have grinded the edges down a bit so they arent sticking out as far past the bottom of the ski.

New skis can be a little grabby in the shovel the factory tune can do that, a ‘new ski tune’ usually involves some light de-tuning at the tip and tail to smooth it out.

Im not talking about dulling. I'm talking about filing down the edges so they stick out from the skis base less and less over time.

Yeah. I feel like after a few days/weeks skiing and getting a few wax and edge tunes breaks in the ski and makes it perform better

once you get the edges worked in on a new ski without taking anything to the file tool-wise, you're totally fine. Its just getting the skis broken in fresh out of the box that sucks sometimes. I had a hell of a time breaking in new skis this season and now can safely say theyre the most fun skis ive ever been on.

Ive always been into skiing. Im just extra stoked now because of the armadas and tyrolia bindings i just bought.



also, i didnt know that icy snow could wear down edges too. I thought ice was lower on the hardness scale than steel.

hell yeah man! I would be stoked if I had new Armadas and Tyrolias too. I have some new Dynastars with Attacks with like 3ish days on them and I am very stoked so I can only imagine if they were Armada Arvs and I think I would be very stoked. Don't tell anyone but I might actually shop for armadas even though I have a pretty full quiver

Use a gummie. But ya. A lot of skis come out of the factory beveled too. Different angles the edges meet at. Which dependent on skier type, snow type, ski type, etc it changes.


I run all my skis around a 2 degree side and 1 base. Gives better initiation and better in variable snow conditions.


I have a super queer background of gate chasing from when I was younger but work as a tech now and have been free riding for the last 12+ years after racing. But seriously. Go talk to a tech. If you are in Southern VT look me up. I’ll show you and teach you. If us older guys don’t pass it on... I’m afraid that meme will come true and everyone will be swerving.... oh wait Simon’s coming back to save skiing!!!!

Freshly tuned edges and new skis feel much better after breaking in.


At the same time fresh edges make me a better skier , it makes tails harder to release and reminds me to focus on technique and to not just bulldoze my way around.

Dolan specifically said “ too hard “.


Some people like a looser, surfier feeling for freeride etc... An edge can have some bevel or even be de-tuned and still carve while being a bit easier to ski and more playful on harder surfaces and rails. It can also prevent rail damage for rail guys.

Ice is still hard and will wear steel down over time. They do metal cutting with high pressure water, which is basically doing the same thing at a greatly accelerated rate
