Broke my ankle in three places skateboarding two days ago and had surgery yesterday. It's sounding like I can't put weight on it for about six weeks but can start working on mobility again in two. After recovery and PT I probably won't be on skis again till late january or february. Good thing I work as a ski coach so I lost my job too! Help me stay sane please
Best wishes to you and to a speedy recovery. My wife broke her ankle 2 years back skydiving and it has been a challenge for sure. You have a goal, stick with it and stick with PT but dont push it too hard, your body needs time.
vibes OP. huge bummer but it won't seem like that long in the long run. Also spring skiing is the best so you will get out of all the holiday BS. I had a similar experience over the summer with a couple months non weight bearing and I am still doing PT
Ankle injuries suck cock. Best advice I can give you is to take it slow. I broke mine in late April and tried to start skating again in late June and fucked it up again. Didn’t skate again till mid August. Invest in a good ankle brace that you can skate in after you’re all healed. I never skate without one now.
TRVP_ANGELNever too late to coach this season, just hop on these bad boys

Honestly looked in to buying one of those when I sprained my MCL last season, theyre so stupidly expensive its wild, I guess everything is skiing is pricey but they run multiple thousands of dollars.

Damn sky diving seems like a gnarly way to get injured!

True, I guess I have to go out to hood this summer and extend the season, there are worse things in the world. How's the ankle feeling now with PT? Are you going to be skiing on it?
SnovoidMagazineShitty dude! Sorry to hear that. Listen to the doc and you'll be good.
Yeah gonna have to avoid dr. newschoolers with this one and just take it slow

Not really planning on skating much after I heal up... It's kind of put it in perspective that I'd much rather be skiing than skating anyway. Sure I'll probably still skate because it's fun as fuck but if Im going to get hurt, Id rather it be with two planks on my feet. Ankle brace is a really good call though, didn't even think of that. Do you wear it skiing as well? or does that get weird in a ski boot?
Haven’t touched my skateboard since the end of September pretty much for that reason. I was actually progressing quite a bit too but I figured I would fuck my shit up just before the season starts. Skating is a bitch like that.

I don’t wear it skiing. A ski boot should stabilize it enough. But it’s so unbelievably helpful for skating. After I broke my ankle I also thought “damn I don’t want to skate anymore”. When I finally got cleared I decided to just go out and only cruise occasionally and take it easy. Ended up falling in love with skating all over again ha. You just have to know your limits, take precautions, take care of your body, etc.
^I bought a ski pass and I think I'm good to go. or at least I'm going to go and find out so whatever. Hell Tanner did both ankles at the same time and look at him
Surgery is pretty intense tho so vibes man just hang in there and know that life will get exponentially better in the near future
Biased post alert: The very, very, VERY best thing you can do is listen to your physical therapist's and doctor's recommendations.
Scenario 1: You do what you want(ski before you technically are cleared - because honestly this is what everyone wants to do lol) and risk getting hurt and then spend an additional few months recovering. To be brutally honest, sometime this WILL work out for you. Most other times it will end in you getting more injured. If it's a risk you're willing to take no one can stop you.
or
Scenario 2: You do what you can per therapist and MD recommendations, seek additional exercises(within reason) to expedite the process without necessarily rushing, and honestly taking it one day at a time and working your program. Maybe your ski season starts late but you will (more times than not) have more time on hill than scenario 1.
Vibes OP, you're in a shitty situation, but don't make it worse than it needs to be. I see people try to go back to activity too soon often, and they end up right back in not-so-great situations. Sometimes spending more time on recovering makes for more time enjoying x,y and z.

Honestly really not planning on skiing before I get cleared. It sucks but Id rather be able to enjoy the very end of my skiing and ultimately ski for longer without having to worry about reinjury. I also coach at Windells and don’t want to miss that season too because of being stupid.
I'm just an active person and I get bummed out when i can’t do shit. Spent the last 3 days reading and watching movies and I feel like im going crazy, so far the best advice was given to me by a snowboard homie who broke her ankle last season and she told me to be constantly visualizing tricks that I want to try when I get back on snow, honestly not a bad idea and its been fun to try to work out new tricks in my head but I think I'm already getting much better at skiing in my head than in actuality.
I feel like the people on NS are fairly active, what are some things that will make me not bored constantly.
Vibes dude. I broke my ankle bouldering in July and am just now able to start climbing and light running. Skiing will come in December if I’m lucky. Listen to your PT, they’ll help you get back to skiing when it’s safe to do so.

Do you like to fish? Maybe there’s some easy lake access or stream/river access for you. You can even get a friend to cast your line and have him set it right in front of you while you chill. Also you can try drawing out the tricks in your head, that idea came from Jesper tjader in unrailistic 2. You could also find a beefy hard drive, get a vpn, and surf the web for new music albums and movies you want to eventually listen to or watch. Get well soon dude!
