Up to $1000 fine if you have the wrong snow tires on your 2WD during “Chain/4x4 restrictions” in Utah (Parleys to Park City and Cottonwood Canyons). Be sure they have the “mountain-snowflake” symbol on the side of the tire.



“mountain-snowflake” = 3PMSF rated = “3 Peak Mountain Snow Flake” = Severe Snow Service Rated





Many chains and snow socks only have a max speed of 30-MPH, so these snow tires are a better option and do meet the requirements for the “Chain/4x4 restrictions”.



I have studded Nokian Hakkapellitta 8’s and the work better than any other snow tires I’ve had. They have the mountain-snowflake symbol.

I see why people would have an issue with this but they have to start thwarting issues and habits that cause congestion and people who simply do not belong on the road despite their own thinking are a big part of that.

Will it help keep jabronis in lifted trucks with the cheapest mud tires they can get off the road?

Anything that will help keep broguy/gal from putting his or her rig in the ditch and closing the pass is good in my book.

Good tires = good day of skiing
Bad tires = bad day of skiing for everyone

Invest in some decent snow tires, avoid chains and those damn socks just for your own safety. Ever seen a chain come apart at 35 mph??

4 snow tires-$400 or even less
4 steel/used rims from junkyard-$50
Have the snow tires mounted on the rims and BAM you have an extra set of wheels and tires for the winter. Just have your studded snow tires removed before April 15th to avoid and fines.

People fuck up and cause accidents or spin out and block traffic. It's the way it's gotta be. That said I had low tread def nkt snow tired on my car for years and they always let me through the chain control. Worked nights at the mtn so that helps.

I never understood why they check tired and chains but dont tell people to turn their fucking headlights on though. Even when the cops sit there.

If you need chains you need fucking headlights you stupid assholes. Most of the time in mountains headlights are pretty frigging recomended.

Cops will never target this though which is bullshit.

Does this rule apply to all wheel / 4wd?

I’ll be coming out west in a rental vehicle , don’t know if it’ll have snow tires , will look into it 😩 was gonna go Jackson then Alta and winter park maybe a basin on way home not trying to spend anytime in a fuckin ditch

Or just stay the fuck home if you know your vehicle cant handle the amount of snow...or get into a shuttle...or hitch hike to the hill.
Seriously, The Kootenays is plagued with city people who cant drive faster than 40mph on the highways, turn off their rear lights during a white-out and never bother with winter tires. They are the ones that run over people backing up because they cant look behind them.
Im glad Canada has regulations about winter tires too.

Sounds like the state is tired of towing people out or cleaning up bodies. And even with 4wd or awd vehicles with snow tires, people will still manage to drive like absolute shit and end up in a ditch on a flat fucking road. Just because you got snow tires doesn't mean you can drive fast as fuck and not leave adequate distance from the car ahead.

+1 to the headlight comment. Came up on way too many people driving 5mph with no lights on in a snowstorm. If I was a semi, that's how you get killed

Question for the locals of SLC, do you think the bad drivers are other locals from Utah or mostly tourists because little and big cottonwood roads in my opinion are pretty mellow in terms of driving difficulty, even in snow, compared to other places throughout the country.

imo utah drivers are awful in snow for some reason. Just driving around town with an inch or two looks like the apocalypse

I travel a lot for work on the east coast and whether it’s rain , fog , snow , ice, or dusk/dawn no one ever drives or uses proper preparations for conditions ( lights , signals, consideration for the ability of a loaded truck etc ) , bad drivers are everywhere

I have snow tires on my personal vehicle
im bringing chains with an awe /4wd rental tho if they don’t have snow tires as an option prolly not and that’s stupid I’d happily pay for it , if it starts to blizzard I’ll just more and wait it out 🤷🏼‍♂️😤
