Beginner Mental Block

Stand next to the rail/box with no speed and just practice jumping on it ?

I have a similar situation as you in many cases.
Whether its skiing or skating for me, the only way ive found to be able to get over mental blocks is to keep trying over and over again. When you get too frustrated, just leave it and come back tomorrow.
Its important to perservere when learning something new. However, its equally as important to take time to clear your mind and come back strong.
Keep going at it. Maybe get friends to encourage you. But when you get too fustrated with yourself, just take a breather and come back to it later.

Are you having a hard time rotating 90 degrees or something?

This is a super common problem. First, make sure you are super comfortable popping and turning 90 onto low rails and boxes. This means that you are landing on the surface at complete 90 and using your skis to scissor or lock onto the rail. If you are not comfortable with that yet, keep working on it.

If you are comfortable, then I recommend coming at one of the more challenging rails with a bit of speed and just trying to pop over them and clear them widthways, not longways. This will help give you the confidence that your tips can clear it completely and that you won't catch an edge. If possible, you can even have a friend spot you or film you to show how much you are clearing the rail.

Once you have done that a few times it just comes down to committing. Make sure you are getting all the way to 90 degrees just like on the lower rails and it should all go great!

I Think nearly everyone went through this and what helped me was slowly progressing in my back yard on pvc to larger and taller side jumps. I also had a pair of mini 128cm kids twin tips which helped me feel better about not catching my tips.

This has been me my whole life, I first learned how to hit a rail when I was 14 or so, and the season after I pussied out again and kept making excuses. The next time I went for a rail I was 17 and I always wanted to go pro like back of my mind pipe dream. Now it will likely never happen, so you gotta go for it. I landed my first 540 this year and threw my first flips (last run of season didn't land) its all mental block. You already know how to do a rail worst thing thats gunna happen to you is you might catch an edge and bruise your side.. So what thats gunna hurt for 2 days. Just do it like you imagine and even if it didn't go your way... What ever you got the jitters out of the way. Try again.

Unless you feel super nervous like butterfly's nervous is normal. suck tht shit up countdown and try your best. But if you feel dizzy don't go for it, maybe find something smaller. If neither of those things happen... Your golden that means you are gunna stomp it within like 10 tries AT MOST.

You just have to hit it and fail and do it again and again until it clicks. I hated learning them and I did it later in life than I wish but they add such a fun dimension to the whole experience. Nothing feels better than landing your rail trick and then linking with something steezy off a kicker. Also just remember that your ski's are just an extension of your feet. That really helped me when learning rails.

-STARE directly at the tip of the rail.
As you approach the end of the grind. Keeep looking forward to see your landing. . and hop back on the ground.

Its not similar to anything off mountian really... jumping onto a skateboard sounds like it’d be hella embarrassing to explain at the Urgent Care

SamiZI've hear of running on to a skateboard, but im looking for something that can help me with the popping part.

i think the skateboard idea is a decent one, but as for the popping part on skis, why don't you just start hitting ride on lips a little faster and treating them like a jump on? just take a little more speed and soon you'll be popping on to the ride-on rail the same way you would on a regular lip on to the rail

also just make yourself try it and see that it's not so bad. go into a really low wide flat rail and jump on and LEAN FORWARD. nothing bad will happen and you'll start to get a feel for it

I had the same problem. As everyone else is saying just do it. Even if you fall you'll realize you didn't get hurt and then all the fear is gone and you can continue until you grease it. You might get a bit bruised every once and a while but if you want it bad enough you wont care.

I have extreme mental block trying to learn to hit rails. I know the hardest part about it is to just do it, but i sike myself out every time. I can hit rails and boxes as long as they're a ride on, i just cant get past the mental aspect of popping on to an urban rail. Does anyone have any tips or tricks to build confidence? I've hear of running on to a skateboard, but im looking for something that can help me with the popping part.

Practice doing it on the side of a slope or just pretend there's a rail, and commiting to the 90, slide there and then go to switch

If you just crash enough times trying, you'll learn that it really doesn't hurt that bad and you are always fine after, it's just the fear of crashing that is holding you back. Once that realization takes place the mental block is pretty much gone.
