Opinion: THALL (& others) insta overposting

First off — I have mad respect for Tanner, his last movie was insane & his dedication to his craft seems to be unmatched given his age. True legend.

This is topic has been covered a lot since the popularity of Instagram has sky rocketed but this year it seems to be getting worse. This could apply to a lot of skiers / snowboarders in the industry.

It it seems that every spot, even some of the shots are being leaked onto Tanner’s insta on the daily whether it be via story or post. If he’s filming for a movie (which I assume he is) it bums me out that it’ll likely be repetitive to what we’ve been seeing all year. Unless there’s this huge reservoir of un-used footage that I’m unaware of....

This brings me to my next question: Do you think there is pressure from “above” I.e sponsors & the overall social media pressure to stay relevant throughout the season?

Social media is operating just how the creators want it to, people are getting more obsessed every day, instragam wants people to post 10 times a day, post a million stories, they want people on their platform as long as they can keep them.

I agree, and it's part of what has turned me off of paying for movies. I want to see a ski movie where everything is new and makes me say holy shit over and over. With social media, I felt like I saw half of a Warren Miller movie before it was even released. One thing about tHall is many of his posts/stories have been POV and I bet his movie is from better angles that look dope af. Fingers crossed he has a boatload of un-posted footy

Why do you think they call it InstaGram. One can post up super easy short clips from their phones.

I don't do Insta. Don't even have a "Smart Phone"
I gotta' do much more work to post to YouTube! I guess "nobody got time for that"!

That's all I'm stating -- they should be saving shots for the segment in my opinion. I honestly don't care how much they post just don't post your damn movie shots on insta & expect people to be hyped on the drop.

I love what ON3P is doing with their team movies for that reason. I had no idea any of those bangers went down

Tanner is going to be homeless in probably 5-10 years. Mostly because he will be too braindead from all the drugs to figure out how to access his bank account or cash checks from Armada.

Saddest part is, with his missing teeth it will be hard to delineate between him and other homeless folks. We might end up with some impostor who mugs him for his ID on the streets of Seattle

I deleted my facebook and insta but i still have snapchat to keep in touch with the foreign homies. I don't miss either platforms but I've found that i just spend way more time on NS and reddit, now. Dammit!

Some sponsors require a certain amount of social media activity as well, so can't blame it on on the gram.

2 more series + top hat and we're done. We post good content as much as anyone on social. If people are bugged that we use a couple days for an annual line launch - considering Instagram is now skiing's billboard - unfollow is one click away.

I guess this isn't really the right thread, but what is the point of the new Woodsman ski? It seems just like a Kartel/Jeffrey but with less symmetry.

It kinda sucks how the social norm turned into posting so damn much. Like I was listening to the Powell Movement episode with Cody Townsend and he was mentioning how he really liked IG because it allowed him to be more in control of the content that he delivers to his audience.

Now it's just turned into a over stimulating re-post pool, and everyone is at the mercy of the IG algorithm which makes it hard for people to get noticed unless the are good at playing the social media game or already have an established follower base.

It's important to find motivation in everything you do! As for the posts - they are doing their job, which is getting people attention. Not something we do a lot (this is the first time) but we're in a spot to try new things and take some risks. Not everything hits but we always learn a lot in the process.
skimoresw1tchI guess this isn't really the right thread, but what is the point of the new Woodsman ski? It seems just like a Kartel/Jeffrey but with less symmetry.

Pretty different. Semi twin (vs full), bi-radius (vs hybrid) + longer turn radius, stiffer flex, further back mount (-6 to -6.5ish), less tail rocker. It's for people that want something more playful and fun than the Wrenegade (and don't want to be mounted -10), but cannot deal with more progressive mount of the Jeffrey. If you are landing switch and such, Jeffrey is a much better option. But if you always felt the Wrenegade was a bit too direction, the Jeffrey a bit too playful, this is a great option.

The top two questions we get are where do I mount (95% of the time...on the line) and do I buy the Wrenegade or Jeffrey? If you are asking that question, this is likely your ski.

I didn't make the thread to cry about instagram -- I dig it, it's the only social media platform I use. As someone who enjoys taking pictures as an art form it became natural for me to use it.

I made this thread out of disappointment that I'm seeing a skier's entire movie played out on insta story throughout the season. It seems like such a terrible waste of immense effort & dedication into getting these shots -- only to be given a 24 hour lifespan on a 4.7 inch display for everyone to see prematurely.

As I said before, this could be applied to a lot of members of the industry -- I'm just using Tanner as an example because it's the best example of over-leaked footage I've been seeing recently. I'd like to think someone who filmed in the age of 16mm would be more likely to hold onto footage.

Since this is what the thread is actually about - just wanted to at least note that this is something ON3P/Oliver/4 crew were super mindful of on ON3P 4, and will be going forward.

Two things about social.
1) It is consumable. That is how it functions - with most posts being gone in an instant. As such, it is a great spot for B-roll content, but it is generally the case that the content posted shouldn't be the best content you have.
2) Social is moneyball. That is the game being played. If you don't understand the reference - its a great book (and movie). For better or worse, that is where skiing media is centered right now. It has limitations, and it is far from all encompassing, but it is a game that has to be played and the key to making it successful comes down to consistency.

could be revisionist history here (my memory is suspect at times haha), but i remember shots used to get leaked pre-release in magazines (sequences, stills, etc) all the time in a very similar way.

myself and many others would be like "damn tanner and jon hit chads and went apeshit, definitely gotta make sure i see teddy bear crisis when it comes out." if you haven’t seen it you should give it a watch, holds up pretty insanely well:

genuinely curious: does a b-roll/bail/POV trick attempt (say, tanner's tree-to-tree redirect he's been posting lately, to continue with analogy) always ruin the eventual movie banger for you, or just in certain instances? if always, how else should someone build hype for a project?

Good contribution to the conversation, and I can see your point.

Honestly I’d be hyped on just seeing a picture of the setup & left wondering “woah what the hell is he gonna do on that”... instead we get a POV, and two other angles of the attempts. Even if they are bails we get to see the trick attempted & basically get a full disclosure of what to expect in the movie on that exact feature. So yes, it does kinda ruin it for me honestly.

Call me over critical but I just think it’s a step in the wrong direction & a step towards ruining what makes a ski movie.
