Get yourself a cheap miter saw. Not necessary but will save time and make it easier to throw down some sweet angles for bracing etc.
Next step buy mad 2x4s. 2x4s, screws, and a saw can build a lot. Look for some free ply even if it's a bit beat up or grab some osb. Plywood is expensive.
Go big or go home. Honestly less than 5 feet is too small imo. 6 or bigger. Build your rails low with wide feet so it doesn't rock and the low height so you don't need as big of a takeoff.
Overbuild it because 2x4s are cheap. Mess around with the saw and cross brace the fuck out of it.
