Skateboarders and longboarders of NS, what's your take on each other? There's definitely animosity between some skateboarders towards those who ride longboards or cruisers. Some longboarders dislike skateboarders too or look at them as elitist snobs.
I think there's a lot of misunderstanding between the two groups tbh, both don't really have a good idea of what the other group does. I feel like people aren't really aware that there are longboard shapes other than the classic pintail & symmetrical drop cruiser, made for purposes other than cruising. IMO people who don't like longboarding are akin to park skiers who think you're a poser if you don't have twin tips and ski park. There's longboard freeride, downhill, freestyle, dancing, and even distance skating. Downhill can reach speeds up to 70mph depending on the road and the skill of the rider, and the best freeriders can bust out powerslides as long as 50 feet or more. Dancing and freestyle are trick-based, but the tricks are mostly different from skateboarding tricks.
Skateboarding is definitely more technical though, and longboarders who don't respect the skateboard grind (pun intended) are straight up delusional. Shit is so fucking hard, even learning to ollie can be scary. There is also so much creativity in trick combos, even on flat ground. I've talked a bit about this before, but I can't really overstate how skilled skateboarders are and how much they have to work. Not much more to say tbh.

You can get away with average coordination if all you do is turns on backcountry lines.
But it takes a different level of coordination to huck your bitch ass into thin air and somehow land a few seconds later as if you were just spinning like a top for fun.

I've been skateboarding for a long time. Got into longboards in college. Skateboarding is harder. Once you get comfortable with the speed longboarding is fun, though, and I'd much rather ride one of those across campus than a skateboard. Racer level grip and rip runs require a lot of skill and confidence, as does race style speed runs and 40mph standies. Anything else isn't as hard as skateboarding. I just love when people call me out for riding a longboard but then I see them at the skatepark and I can skate too.
I don't give a shit what other people do with their skateboards, though I do understand how they think we're elitist skateboarders. If you show them a nice downhill run they'll totally agree it's hardcore.
Also also, the level of pro racing is insane right now. We went from evos and massive wheelbase dropthroughs on 190mm trucks to basically slalom boards and more gripping than slipping in races. Backside/toeside slides at high speed are terrifying.

I think you need to watch some downhill and freeride vids because I would not describe those disciplines as “chill”.
If you’re good at them though than 20-30mph runs can be chill but that also depends on how technical the path/road is.

Dude there are SO many people who act like skating is their passion or something when all they do is cruise. Most people who take longboarding seriously dislike those guys as much as skateboarders do. @longboard_police on Instagram really opened my eyes to how many of those people there are, and r/longboarding is full of pics of unused Landyachtz Dinghys and shit Amazon cruisers like I said.
There is actually surprising amount of cool shit you can do with cruiser boards tho, like city slashing and freeriding and mixing in stuff like slappies and ollieing over stuff and skating street transitions. Just watch Landyachtz videos. The problem is that people who buy those boards almost never do that shit lol. There’s no problem with cruising bc a skateboard is inherently a transportation device, but people will make all these posts and super boring videos of them riding and it’s cringy af lol

Sounds like just a problem with the park being crowded as well as people not knowing etiquette. I’ve been in the same park as a lot of BMXers and I haven’t had issues like that

Dude slalom downhill race type setups are not at all appropriate for a beginner. Beginners should get a midsize board with mellow concave and profile and run 45 sym 180mm truccs or something like that. Then they can move on to different board shapes and truck angles depending on what they like and didn’t like about that setup. Also start with freeride wheels and work your way up to grippy wheels.

I'd like to see you try dancing lol, and often times that stuff is mixed in with freestyle stuff such as g-turns, no complys, big spins...but if you don't want to count anything just because the board happens to be a bit long, I'm not gonna try to convince you.
Not to mention downhill and freeride, a traditional skateboard setup is not very optimal for going fast because of the bad wheel clearance and the fact that the skateboardd trucks and the short wheelbase make it super swervy. But whatever

I was lowkey that guy lol. Kinda. I rode my friend's mini cruiser to get used to riding a board. But before I bought my own I learned about downhill/freeride and decided I would do that in the seasons I can't ski. Now I've done downhill for a bit but I haven't been able to put much time in so I'm still at a low level.

Vert skate boards are bigger than street skateboards. For stability reasons. Longboard is long so you can go fast. Skateboard has two raised edges on each side to help with tricks.

Oh man, the absolute carnage I have seen at CU from guys that do this.
I see the two separate types of enjoyment. Skating is repetition until you achieve accomplishment and Longboarding is enjoying yourself and a constant push for the next hill etc. Personally, I prefer longboarding because you can have a good time without the frustration of trying to land tricks etc. Then again, the stakes can be alot higher longboarding if you are bombing big hills.

Most of my longboarding has actually been drilling hands-down slides on straight hills. So for a while, yeah you do have to drill, but as you keep getting better you just have the muscle memory to bomb any winding road like you're skiing down a new run. But in both sports you definitely have to try scary shit and fall and fail.

Yeah, which is why I find it funny how r/longboarding always reccs them to beginners who say they want a more stable board for riding hills, by which they really mean very slightly faster than pushing speed. But if you went in and said just get better they’d throw a fit. They blame their setups for everything, when in reality it’s very largely about rider skill until you get to insane speeds.

I always loved this one. I like to think people are logical and capable of self evaluation, but then they do stuff like this. It takes them longer to get anywhere and they fall in route.
For me longboarding was like weed.
It was a gateway for me to discover skateboarding.

My analogy is more like longboarding is backcountry, skateboarding is park. You’ll get injuries more frequently in parks, but the biggest injuries and deaths are in longboarding (mind you, I’m only talking downhill, I do snob and don’t consider pushing around a board on flatland as longboarding).
