you guys will think i'm nuts, but the other day i skied a friend's pistols (179) on hardpack and even though they're super wide they actually handle pretty well. the width and length take a bit of getting used to (i ski a 164 1260...76mm waist), but after 2 runs, i actually liked the way it felt. but yeah, i agree, if you ride pow more i would go with the pistol because of its 'floatability'.
i have pe's and arv's. i cant testament to the seth pistols shape and size, however, my pes are holding up very very well. on the other hand, the arvs are the smoothest ski to ride. they handle at speed in all conditions and are super fine in pow. the topsheet is a bit weak, and the base is thin, but the edges are bomber and i love the way they ride. they are slowly becoming my everyday ski. ride them both if you can then make up your mind. my vote is for the arv. plus everyone and their sister has the pistols.
I'm having issues with the bases on my Ar5s, which are the same as on ArVs. I know Dave loves his to ride, and I sure as hell believe that (my Ar5s are great skis aside from durability concerns), but he'd agree with me on the thin bases thing. I also have pistols for pow, and they're great; they hold up really well. I don't reccommend them on ice, but they're fine on groomed, and once you get into an inch of soft snow or more, they're amazing skis. Anyways, as far as ride goes, you can't go wrong with either ski. I just think the SPs hold up better. Armada has awesome edges though, I can't believe how well mine are doing considering the rest of the damage.
