Besides looking over my brother's shoulder as he watched "mashed potatoes" or looked at threads about peeing in girls butts, I don't feel like I got to experience the golden age of NS. For those of you who lived through it: What was it like?

just give me some hope that at one point on this site there was a better joke than commenting "dogfart" everytime TRVP posts

Im not complaining, I love NS now. Maybe I shouldn't have said "golden age", I just was wondering for all of you that have been around for a long time how were things back in the day.

This is a newer account and I had had a few in the past. Honestly, there was not really a "golden age" like people say. NSG was just a dumping ground of reddit reposts and trolls with no real originality. This led to an increasingly toxic culture where people had this weird attitude where you could not have an actual discussion. Its like everyone had to have an impassionate or snide response to any thread which ruined SG and turned a lot of younger skiers away. Eventually everyone had to up the ante of toxic culture and shock value until it actually became a place were people were PMing rape threats and crazy shit like that. I cant confirm this at all but about 10 years ago a buddy and I were talking about NS being shitty and he told me a story about how Tanner Hall created an account and everyone shit on him until they found out who he was and then suddenly kissed his ass and he got pissed.

Eventually it got to the point that Bishop had to basically nuke the site and enforce more strict moderation which we have today. Yeah it can be annoying but the vibe is much better now, online edits have been dropping like crazy here this year, new skiers are actually being welcomed and getting stoked on the sport at a time we need it most and there are more original and (more or less) real stories that are way more fun to read than some crap someone copied and pasted from reddit or 4chan. Honestly, this is actually the first time I have enjoyed being on this site instead of shaking my head and walking away after a few weeks which I have done a few times over the years.

The gear forums, ski forums and BST forums were all way more active. It was less sponsored out and everything was WAAAAAAYYYYYYY more active with better content and more non-troll members commenting. NSG has always been a tire fire, but the other forums were better and the members were better/real skiers and not trolls.
It was a place where skiers could go for any advice or tips and get real answers and not get shit on for not being able to triple misty 93204784523 on to a 9ft rail with a double pretzel.
Not that NS is bad now, it just is different than the mid to late 2000s.

also i joined kinda late onto NS but it was still pretty damn good. there were really funny threads all the time and people could post without being banned/censored by NPC mods. There was also this thing called tinychat which was actually really cool. I got to know a few people on there and there were often some pretty interesting antics going on. Unfortunately i have fallen out of touch with most of them, but I miss the days there were always people in the tinychat

2001-2004 it was a much smaller community that met up at events more frequently. Many of the oldtimers grew up and moved on. I've been on NS longer than I've not been on NS. Food for thought. I grew up on NS, and shudder at some of my older posts.

NS was the true social media. when something cool happened in skiing, you saw it on newschoolers. there was no instagram or snapchat videos and you saw everything here. the same way people scroll instagram today watching videos and seeing pics of the latest tricks and mountain reports, thats what newschoolers was. before websites like the chive was a thing, nsg was the place to post pictures of hot girls and see other random things, newschoolers really was the mecca for everything back in the day

Lol those were the good ole days when you tried to call your friend but the phone would be dead because his little brother was on the internet and nobody had cell phones. We used to troll the shit out of the AOL chat rooms and people would freak out because nobody knew what trolling was back then and everyone assumed you were serious.

Old NS was great. It was more active, that's for sure. There were characters who joined just to brighten our day, like Lil_G. There were a whole lotta kids who felt like they could make it if they could release a great edit, and there 2 (!) whole magazines dedicated to skiing (RIP Freeze) that were fantastic and influenced me more than I'd care to admit. Movies were smaller productions and more indie, usually always about the shitty skits in between amazing skiing and much less planned out, so they were more fun to watch. Alot of us were simply together at the right period of time, and then reached critical mass, going our separate ways when other media became a thing. I don't really know how to describe it other than it was social media which was actually social - you'd meet tons of friends and you'd actually go ski with them or provide a room when they came into town. You still kinda do it on here, but it's harder. My trolling seems really lighthearted in retrospect - I don't think trolling was as bad as some other people experienced it, around the time I left. I stopped in roughly 2014, so just post golden-age.

I don't know where it went downhill, but you could see it starting to creep in, in the way moderation was done, and the way people interacted with each other. I guess some bad shit went down for other people, but it started to take a really mean tone and I left. Now it seems okay, but I don't think it will ever recover, because social media is more broken and much less social than it used to be. People abused it and now it's all just a platform for self-promotion in general, so no one's looking for a forum like NS to come join anymore.

Basically I think NS just reflected the world as it grew - we all started polarizing along with it and eventually scattered, just like all social media. Facebook is broken, too. We stopped interacting with each other at some point and started posing more often than talking.

You can't really fix that. It also doesn't help that skiing is expensive and the baby boomers and multiple recessions have utterly destroyed the middle class's ability to partake in expensive luxury sports. I imagine newschoolers will take off again when that's fixed, but good luck. Hope it does, probably won't by the looks of it.

As a 15 year old it was great. I remember if there were no mods online, people would start threads full of ass and titties, the entire front page would just get bombed.

Honestly, I think NS is better now, though less active.

Did i ever say i wasn't useless? I contribute nothing to this site. Just saying out of all the peeps that posted a lot his were usually dumb, but he is better than most of the people now i will say that.

2012 to around 2015 was prime. Threads were fun because everyone would roast each other and post overused stuff in EVERY thread. It was actually fun. Skierman was so mysterious, the whole llama debacle, Chug life (I believe he was active at that time?), Big Air Dave, OP's mom in every thread, and that's just what I can remember off the top of my head. There was SO much good stuff, and I only got here in 2012!

Holy jesus. I just realized it's been a full decade since I got into the NS tinychats. Simpler times.

Was pretty cool last season when we were streaming the olympics. I think we had 70 something people during the ski slopestyle.
