Pivot 12 vs 14

Soooo I posted this in the what binding thread but I kinda feel like no1 is reading it so im just gonna make a post regarding it:

I'm about to buy a new pair of skis and I'm not sure which binding to buy though I'm leaning against getting the pivot 12 or 14. So my question is if there are any differences between pivot 12 and 14 except the DIN range? Are the toe or heel pieces worse in the 12? How do they compare qualitywise? Tried to search for it but didn't find any good answers (maybe i'm shit at searching tho)

Is this true? Where did you read it? Just curious because im in the market and was gonna go for the 14's but only ride a 10 DIN.

Get the 14s because your din will be in the middle. Don't get the 18s, you don't need them

The 12 and 14 are identical except for the springs making the 14 slightly heavier due to higher din rate. Pivots shouldn't be ridden near their minimum or maximum to optimize function, making (10) the sweet spot for the 14. Hope that helps OP.

This isn't true. Bindings function the same at either end of their retention setting or they wouldn't pass DIN standard. There is no "sweet spot".

I couldn't argue your point because I'm only working off the collective (opinion) from the major ski forums. So no data/facts to back up my claim. However, I will give an example that swayed me into believing that it was plausible. Take any car or truck springs. If you lower (compress) your car using the clamping method, the ride is jarring on the tiniest pebble. Lifting your truck (stretching) using only blocks produces the same jarring ride. Both application produced a result that the springs were not originally designed for thus making them less than optimal (smooth ride with proper travel). Thoughts?

Get the 12s as long as you don't need a higher DIN like they said (same thing different DIN). I'd also recommend checking out the Attack 13s and STHs. I run Attacks and love them and the price is great. I was close to getting Pivots but I found a pair of 2017 Attacks for $130 brand new last year and I bought the Attack2 13s last month because I wanted to support my local shop and I was unable to find any 2017s. The window where you see your DIN has changed but other than that they are the same from my understanding. I believe I saw a website selling a pair of 2017s around $100-$130ish recently.

This "collective opinion" is old school thinking. It's not supported by evidence of any kind.

I'm sure you could look up the TUV certification documentation and have some understanding of the process but bindings have to pass at all settings in the din range which is sort of why they have ranges entirely. You could to some degree crank the dins on a particular binding past the range the binding was constructed for but the results would be less and less consistent the higher you go.

I'm also not saying it's bad to be in the middle of a din range for any given binding. It's probably a good idea and a safe option but riding a 10 or 11 on a 12 din binding for an extended period is fine. Just because your din is 11 doesn't mean you need 16 or 18 din bindings.
