My Binding Choice, was I wrong?

Hi NewSchoolers,

I am looking for some assurance with my choice of setup, I want to know if if the additional weight is hindering my ability to do tricks etc.

My set up is - CT Faction 2.0s 2017 + Marker Baron 13 EPF 110mm Large 2017 / 2018 Ski Bindings - All mountain mount.

I had planned eventually to do some touring therefore this justified the choice of binding. I just want to know if this additional weight will be hindering my ability to jump / butter / drop or anything freestyle / freeride related?

Would strengthening my legs in the gym be a good idea?

Of course, leg workouts is a something you dont want to skip when it comes to skiing.

Yeah for sure. I am going to the gym before this years trip. Still worried about the weight of the binding though

It will probably be noticeable, but not a problem. I've got a pair of Barons mounted on some 120mm skis, (2200g+ per ski) and while I'm definitely aware that there's more weight on my feet than with other setups I can still jump/ollie/ make smaller spins no problem.

The faction Skis are 1950g per Ski and the EPF Baron 13s are 1390g each . This gives a total of 3340G weight per Ski / Binding. Seems alot.

Further on this. Comparing these weight to most other 120mm under foot bindings the difference seems to be between 250g-300g.

I’m just saying barons pretty much ruin playful skis. I’d get either the shifts or some attacks or pivots and some daymakers. Keeping the playfulness and being able to flex the ski withought feeling like skiing on high heels is worth shelling out a lot of money for shifts or daymakers imo

Do you already have everything mounted up OP? If so just go have fun and don't second guess it. Don't listed to these guys other suggestions unless you are still shopping. You can have a lot of fun skiing in bounds on a marker frame binding. I did a lot of days like that. Alpine bindings on the same ski felt a a little lighter and better but the frame bindings didn't "kill' the feel of the ski.
Get skins and actually tour this season though otherwise there is really no point to the frame bindings.

You made a good decision.
I rock a pair of Faction 2016 CT4.0 and slapped a pair on baron13 because I didnt have tech compatible boots. I wanted to use them as deep powder, massif huck and backcountry trick skis. So far, I am super impressed how strong they are and with the safety margin they provide ( adjusted correctly, they will pop off in gnarly crashes). I was able to compete in touring contests (and did great times) but the weight is very noticeable. Still, Im able to huck cork 7s on medium jumps and backflips without worries. They have good power transmission for a frame binding, but do wear down after a while. On average, I get 200 days before they fall apart or begin to shake.

So far, I found the skis play a huge influence on being able to pull bigger spins than bindings. I had a set of Rossignol Super 7s and found them nearly impossible to spin with due to the unreal weight and horrible swing rate with the same Baron 13 bindings.

I agree. They're fine for chargy skis tho. I find that the binding height has a larger effect on my skiing that the weight.

Hey man could you elaborate on how the height of the binding effects your skiing? The baron EPF13s do sit you up quite high, maybe 3-4cm more than non-frame bindings.

U just feel like you r skiing on top of a two by four basically. I have a pair of barons on some Hellbent’s with zero camber and it’s not as noticeable as when I had them on a pair of mordecais with camber. I actually prefer barons with Hellbent’s cause they stiffen them up under foot a bit and actually make them a little bit ridable at higher speeds. I just think putting frame bindings on a park specific ski like the ct 2.0s is a bad idea.

It feels like a little more work to crank a quick turn because you're further away from the edge of the ski. Imagine a binding with an incredibly tall stack height, it would be more difficult to initiate a turn because you'd have to lean a lot more. This makes me feel less connected to my ski. The extra height also magnifies the amount of force on your boot, like when you use a pipe on the end of a wrench when something's too tight, so I find that they release a tad more easily.

FYI I think that tyrolia AT binding has the lowest stack height, but a funky design in the back which seems to have an effect on how the rear of the ski flexes.

I still ride frame bindings (dukes) cause you gotta compromise, but it's not an in bounds ski.

You're gonna be fine. I ski Baron's on some K2 Marksman and I love them. Stack height and weight do make a difference but it's really minimal to the feel of the ski and what you can do on it. Your reservations about your setup will affect your skiing way more than the weight or stack height will so if its gonna be insurmountable for you change it, but otherwise just have fun on it
