I've been on the search for skis for the season and I noticed that a lot of the skis within my interest/price range have tails that i wouldn't quite consider fully twin tipped (4FRNT MSP and the Bent Chetler 100s to a certain extent). I really like doing half cabs(switch 180s) off cornices and cliffs, so I was wondering: Has anyone had trouble riding switch in pow or off piste in general with skis that didn't have full-blown twin tips?
examples if you have no idea what I'm talking about -
You’re talking about a half cab which would have you landing regular and not switch. In my experience, landing switch with not fully tipped tails can be a problem especially if it’s a serious incline.
What you’re proposing is totally doable just gotta be a little cautious.
Can't comment on the 4FRNT MSP but I've skied the bentchetler 100 switch both on piste and off piste in some chop and fresh snow (wasn't particularly steep to be honest) and found them pretty good. only issues I had i would attribute to the fact that this was at a test and atomic had mounted them up relatively far back. The 'recommended' line is around -7cm but there's also lines all the way up to about -2 which would definitely be better for centred stance/switch riding
Tim Durtschi and Mitchell Bower both ski the Bentchetler 100's switch, usually fast as well. I personally watched Tim throw a huge 5 over some rocks at the Bird last spring, switch ski out looked smooth too
I have some directional k2s with tail rocker instead of a full twin tip. It’s more the variable snow and quick transitions that you notice it isn’t a full twin. Also moving off of a center mount and more symmetrical ski you notice the switch performance kind of sucks.
Just give'r a go you can't really know how it's gonna feel until you try. I was sketched about doing switch landings on my hojis which are technically flat tail, but super rockered, and worked fuckin great. Just get a feel for the ski, odds are you can take off and land switch on almost any ski you get that isn't a race ski.
