Ski instructing

Should I do it? My parents are making me have some type of job during this winter.
Pros:
Literally Getting paid to ski
Seems like fun teaching kids
Free seasons pass
Decent pay

Cons:
Going to have to watch my friends lap on some days
40 mins away

Don’t know if it’s worth it to possibly miss days skiing by working a real job, but whne I ski I can do whatever I want. Or never miss skiing, but I can’t lap with my friends on some days.

Should I apply?

Sounds like some western world problems you're having. Have to get a job? Would you rather work cleaning dishes or at least being on the mountain? No brainer my man. You're friends aren't going anywhere and it'll give you good experience and something to put on your resume if you ever move and want a job at another resort.

I worked last season as a ski instructor and here's my opinion on it. Super fun if you're good with kids because that'll be your primary group of students. Get ready for them to change your schedule the day before you work so you have to work the whole day rather than just the morning. Pay is less than great but it is fucking awesome getting payed to ski. If you're tolerant, patient, energetic, good with kids and not a brain dead idiot (supposedly) you'll love it. I have my csia 1 and am going for my 2 in January. Most mountains also offer pay rises the higher your qualification is or the more time you put in. For example level 2 base pay at my hill is $15.50 CAD as Compared to my $13.50. When I work again next season, my pay will be upped $.5 again. Not much but does help in the scheme of things. Yes go for it. You need a job whether you like it or not. Why not have one doing what you love. If you get to create the lesson plan make itfun for both you and the students. Get creative.
The long drive sucks but thats just something you deal with. I have a 45min drive.

By decent money I’m meaning 4 bucks above minimum wage, which would be my alternative pay if I were to work in a restaurant or something.

I worked 3 seasons snowboard/ski instructing at the local hill. First official job on the books at 14. It was a wild good time. Shitty sometimes but amazing. Had a good group of degenerates, which most ski schools have.

Got hired on to work the next season at a bigger mtn but almost got fired for building a big ole booter in the middle of the slope, and ended up switching to park crew to fill an open spot.

I could never do it full time again, but I have no regrets about the years I did it. Went back to build a park for the same Mtn farther down the road and did a 1 day a week freestyle coaching camp to get the kids into park. Then the last 2 summers we did 4 one day freestyle camps and I coached a bunch of those.

Teaching is fun, but you will def get some shit lessons that will test your sanity. At the emd of the day, you're getting paid to be on snow, so at least theirs that.

The free pass can be a huge perk if parents wont buy you one as well. Try it out, maybe you'll hate it, maybe you'll love it and still be doing it when you're'r 40. The one thing I can say is I doubt you'll regret it. Whether or not it's your jam it's a decent experience.

i mean you have to drive 40 mins to work everyday, that 4 bucks per hr is already blown most of it for gas

do it, try to find a lax ski school, isn't fun when you have a stick up your ass the entire time, pay isn't good but I'll assume your a teenager so money is money and skiing is fun so send it

Good point. But I’ll be driving to ski all weekend days/ some weekdays anyway so idk how it’ll all add up.

The best part about working for 7 Springs is staff cafe. 2$ for a full meal (and the food is usually better tbh), salad, desert, and a drink. You can get it whenever you want.

I don’t know what mountain your at, but I’d look into trail crew—- mountain safety stuff... don’t have to yell at kids all day, and may get the opportunity to ski pow before everyone else gets to it🤙🏽 Just be prepared to have thick skin.

I'm a ski instructor! It is definitely a fun job. You meet the best people, paid to ski, etc. However, it is very hard. Odds are you will start with kids aged 5-8 or so. Depending on where you work, you basically won't get a break all day long. You will be in charge of around 8 kids, in a very chaotic environment. The easy parts are extremely easy, but the hard parts are very hard. You will have days where everything that can go wrong will go wrong. If you can manage that with a smile on your face, I would recommend ski instructing. Looks really nice on a resume too.

im a teacher at my local hill and it kinda sucks to see the boys lapping on a really nice day but when your friends want new gear but have no money, you'll be laughing cause you can get all the new stuff. Its worth it. do it for one year and see

I'd do it. On top of the skrill and the fact that it's better than a lot of other jobs, it looks good on your resume for college/life

You won't be able to get bent out of shape having kids ski over your skis and your topsheets will be absolutely wasted. Go for it!

Teaching is nice. I've been doing it for the past four seasons now and the perks are decent, I'm able to make my own schedule, and go freeski when I'm not on the schedule.
