Today is the Day. Canada Votes on Cannabis

About time. They've been flying those red marijuana leaf flags for years.

No, Canada is not voting on legalizing cannabis. Canada already voted on that. The Senate is voting on whether to accept the latest version of the bill or reject it for further amendments.

I'll explain.

Legalization was one of the large platform issues of the Liberal party and Canadians elected them in 2015 on that promise and many other promises (lots have been broken). The Liberals then drafted the bill and it was put to vote by our elected officials in 2016. This vote is done by those elected to represent the will of the people and the passing of that vote is essentially Canadians voting in favour of legalization.

What then happens in Canada is bills passed by the House of Commons (our elected officials) then go to our Senate (appointed, unelected, mostly old white dudes) where they are supposed to be the sober second thought to make sure there are no glaring errors. If there are errors they will reject the bill and it goes back to the House of Commons for amendments before being sent back to the Senate once again.

Unfortunately, the Senate (being a bunch of old prudes) has seen a lot of "issues" with this bill (some have been legit) with many of the Senators looking to kill legalization outright. The issue with this is they working against the will of the people and against our elected officials who represent our interests best. Many are trying to reject the bill purely as a partisan issue or for their own moral well being rather than any logical reason. Some are trying to delay it past the next election (for example saying there hasn't been enough consultation with Indigenous peoples). So far the Senate has forced around 40 amendments to this bill, one example of an amendment is now each province can decide whether home-grown cannabis is legal (some have already said they will make it illegal) as opposed to the original draft which allowed home-grown cannabis outright.


This vote is just another by the Senate (not the first) on whether to pass the bill as it stands now, or to vote it down for more amendments or, as some Senators are trying, to kill it outright or delay it past the next election.

Yeah my bad Vinnie.... All the news outlets basically had that as their headline. Didn't realize til I got much more into it. That vote was HUGE though. The senate has much more opposition than the house. It was the third reading. From what I can gather about Canadian lawmaking, it's on its way to the house. If the house passes it as is, then it will go back to the senate for one final approval then to royal assent to become law?

Either way this train isn't stopping and most expect this to be law within the next month or so and have sales by September (latest projections).

It makes me sick that they'd want to ruin such a wonderful country with drugs.
