Hating on Comp skiing is wack

Honestly makes me want to go bananas like THALL in his latest rant. The only negative people in skiing are dinguses who think too highly of themselves & their "style", and they looooove to complain about how comps and the olympics are ruining the sport. They gobble it up. Never heard a comp skier talk shit on film skiers. These dinglebats are the people who ruin skiing with their negative attitudes and copycat styles that are either stuck in 2010 wearing XXXXL still or copy anything Magnus or Wabs rock.

If you don't like it, don't watch it. I promise the Olympic committee and Mark Gaper won't sneak into your house and take a shit in your ski boots.

I think another reason comps get a lot of hate is because for most of us In the Midwest or east, USASA is like the only way to compete. And it’s incredibly gay. You pay like 80$ or something to become a member, and then sometimes additional fees per comp, all to compete against nobody because fucking nobody does this shit. There’s always some young kid at my hill who does it because he’s obsessed with the idea of “going to nationals”. There are no good comps left. Even local rail jams have become shit over the last 5 years

It's not that its wack, some sick shit is done at comps it's that it's too bureaucratic and full of red tape nonsense. The FIS and Olympic committees suck the fun out of everyhting.

I hate comp skiing because it is unapproachable unless your parents are loaded, and willing to throw all the money in the world at you. I think that comps are ruining the sport because kids don't see the tricks that being thrown in comps and thinking "mom I want to try park skiing." Film skiing is what make park skiing seem approachable to the youngsters. This was my experience at least. I never wanted to try park skiing because all I had seen was Xgames and then some buddies showed me some park movies and vids and I instantly wanted to try.

Well the point I'm trying to get across is that the people who constantly bash comps are whack. I agree that comps are repetitive, that you can't truly judge skiing as a tangible thing, and that it is becoming closer & closer to a true sport. But none of that affects anybody except the people who are in the comp. So the only negative thing coming out of this are the people who make this a negative thing by complaining about something that has zero correlation to themselves when they go ski for themselves. Oystein Braaten getting a gold and Teal Harle getting screwed off the podium has no affect on what I'm going to do on the mountain. There is so much happening in skiing and so much content being produced outside of contests that you can focus on, that to say that comp skiing is ruining skiing is an absurd idea because comp skiing only affects the people in the contests.

Ya I was A USSA coach, and training to be a judge, but the things you have to look for while judging are completely ridiculous, as well as way dated. Both a backflip and a 360 are scored as a 360. I’d imagine they could not properly score rodeo or bio. They as well still use the term “dinner roll.”

that isn't a real point when all the content creators are living soup can to ramen and living in a van because all the .50 cents that companies put into skiing goes to comp skier and supporting the person that might make it on the podium, and even then they have shown they will only support after the skier has success, ie people with go fund me to the Olympics ect ect.

if you are into comp skiing great, i like to see people preforming under the intense pressure of that environment as well but you can't deny the criticism when it is valid.

Comps as a whole are a good time to me, pushing yourself with other kids you know is awesome and landing a run feels great. Only problem with comps are who they're run by, judging, and the occasional assholes from teams being all serious and mean. Also if everyone relaxed with the corks it'd be nice, literally every decent amateur run at usasa nationals ends with right cork 7, left cork 9, switch 9/10, bring back rodeos and bios in comps for fuck sake.

Comp's are cool... I'm just over the big-air spin to win 'aerials' nonsense.

I'd much rather watch a local railjam - which is really all we had back in the early 2000's before the olympics and all that.

The freeride tour is pretty entertaining, though. Watching it live is even crazier.

Comp hater are like the dub,trip, quad haters.

We get it, you're ultra core but there's plenty of room in skiing for it all. Also a lot of the people riding the comps, throwing the big spins, still lap the park with the squad throwing more normal steezed out tricks.

There's been a resurgence in the more fun comps the last decade. Weirder setups, more style. I wonder how much comes down to actually hating the comps and big tricks, and what part is simple nostalgia for the olden days.

If I could throw a quad without my bones turning to dust on landing I'd probably give it a go. At the same time I enjoy watching the smaller steeze out spins more. I think I've only seen one triple outside of competition in my life, and a very low percentage of dubs compared to all the 3-9spins flat or single cork.

I think the general style in park skiing/riding today is as good/better than it's ever been.

Lol, ya thats what I use. You can even get free fisheye camera apps that actually work pretty well. Some friends and I filmed an urban session on just our phones. Phone cameras are pretty good now, and you can get a 5 dollar selfie stick to help with stabilization when filming follow cams. I just don't see a need for fancy expensive equipment when you can make a decent edit with like 5 dollars of equipment.

I like comp skiing but I disagree. Seeing comp guys just cruise around in the park is way sicker than seeing them in a slope run. Example:

there are plenty of skilled skiers out there but most don't put the time into staying at the level needed to have sucess in ski comps. the kids winning train all year to ski at that level.

I cant speak for the west coast, but on the east coast.. Comp park skiing is the lamest shit in the sport. The National Freestyle Park Association of Whatever comes thru on a nice blue bird day... and shuts down the MAIN FUCKING SECTION of the ALREADY WAY TOO SMALL park, just so young heads can play "Im a pro!" for the rest of the day. So beat. Not to mention most of the athletes involved lowkey suck. lol sometimes i stand there and watch yall lame the place up for a sec and then spark my blunt and rip them nicey nicey tricks your comp team gawks at in the park next to ya just to stunt on ya.

man, i drove 3 hours to do this because i live to ski. So.. aint no turning back for shit. Its just wack that on many levels. Who even cares who the "best" is?? Its about who the steeziest, and chillest is. And its a FREE ADMISSION competition that goes on all the time, forever. Making friends cuz you fw their style, not their scorecard.

maybe im just too anti establishment to see it, but i cant imagine being happy with a judges decision on my skiing ever (unless i won)(which i totally would)

If anyone is from south eastern wisco you have probably heard of the USASA end of szn bash. It is probably the only USASA event worth doing because you can win a decent sum of cash for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place.

Can someone help me understand ski economics I’m struggling to see how on one end comp skiing brings in money, but comp Skiers are barely getting by. I’m also not understating how skiing as an industry doesn’t really have any money when it’s an expensive sport that 9x / 10 attracts upper middle class to upper class enthusiasts. Where does the money go

Sure I get that it’s not as Popular as say Skateboarding. I say that because all of my non skater friends will watch Skateboarding any day yet when I want to watch skiing theyre less stoked about it (maybe that’s why content skiing doesnt pay??) who knows
