Rails on new skis
Hey. It's been few years since the last time i was skiing and this winter i've really wanted to get back on skis and i just bought myself new skis. I've always had used skis before so they've kinda had a bit smoother edges so rails have been fine, but i was wondering if i should actually try to make the edges of my new skis a bit smoother somehow so they'll slide better on rails or do you think i'll be fine with them as they are

Go to a shop and get a full detune. it will prolong your edge life and you wont catch your edges as easily. People will say it hurts all mountain performance which it does but I don't think it does to the degree that people make it out to be.

Go to a shop? wtf? nah go to your local street curb or grab a file from your basement and file those edges down

you'll probably want to file them down so you don't fall on your face trying to do a routine rail slide. definitely made that mistake with the factory edges. but when you file go easy. its a lot easier to file off more later rather than trying to fix your hack job of taking away too much.
I used a hard gummy stone and detuned underdoot kinda. I’m pretty sure it worked well
You'll be fine without it for sure. If you are nervous you can always take a rock to them under foot for a few passes. It's about the simplest, most caveman concept in the world to dull an edge so please don't buy a special rock or pay someone to do it.
I detuned my chronics when I got em and I regret doing it tbh.
It literally smears when I try to initiate a carve rather than properly edge into the snow. So if you're gonna detune, I wouldn't go too ham, a few strokes will be more than enough.

just grab a tough mill file that has two different levels of grit. Go to town on each edge for 5 minutes with the sharp side of the file, then you can de burr a good amount of it with the other side which doesn’t take as much time. If you really want, you can get a diamond stone to finish it off but its not necessary. For park, take off more edge than you think, the skis won’t last long enough to bother with the life of the edge.

You can totally do it with fresh edges, just slide a few easy smooth rails at first to get used to it. Then, I'd say, if you dislike how they feel, dull them a little with a gummy stone or have someone do it

Aight, cool. Thanks for the answers everyone. I think i'll dull them a bit but quite carefully and see how they feel.

Do this. It will help you avoid edge cracks.
I nearly died catching an edge when I got my current pair. I had no file to detune them on the spot, so I just rubbed them against a rail, and it worked fine. Plus you don't risk going too far or scratching the base with a file with this method.

This is exactly what i do. 4 or 5 passes underfoot and a little beyond with a simple rock will take the bite out of the edge and round it out nicely without taking too much material off the edge the way a file does.
I’ve been skiing park for 15 years and doing this with no problems. Why do people pay money for this.
