If your anti gun just don't own a gun, there you go. thats half of the U.S. without guns. can i get a yee yee
and AR in AR-15 does not mean Assault Rifle.
How about, I'm anti my kid getting shot at school. I have guns and understand that we as a nation need to do something to stop this round about of shootings, prayers then nothing. Instead of one side saying we need to ban all of them and the other saying now I want more of them, can't we sit down and have a rational conversation about why and how to address the issue at hand.
I believe the 2nd Amendment is protected by the Constitution therefor the blankets of confederation need to be soaked by the blood of patriots willing to defend our God-given rights. In this case the patriots are scores of little children and teenagers attending school or church or adults and teenagers attending music festivals.
Yeah we're on the right path here. I have a big American flag in my yard also because I'm really patriotic and know whats right and guns.
We all know fucking AR doesn’t stand for assault rifle you fuck.
But when does a ArmaLite rifle 15 becomes a military grade or assault rifle class????
Is it when you add a 30 round clip? 75 round drum? Tri shot? Full auto? Scope? Red dot? Pistol grip? Sling to hip hold?
Yes some stupid Americans think AR means assault rifle but like I assume not all large collection gun owners are not mass murdering killing psychopaths you should assume some Liberals own guns and understand guns.
Bigger question is why this 19 year old adult who was a know mentally disturbed who can’t buy beer can buy the most easily modified rifle on the market with no
issues.

Get fucked op.
I agree, the accessibility is a big issue. How can one purchase a weapon like this LEGALLY and not be able to buy some bud light. America, get it together...
So here we are again one side saying the other side is stupid and can’t criticize the issue because of lack of knowledge about proper terminology. This isn’t exclusive thing to one side or the other.
This is a problem of the whole grand scheme of things in this country. Just for comparison I would say wolf hunting should be allowed because most hippies know nothing of population control when it’s out of hand.
Yes im obviously left leaning and
lacking in knowledge of guns.
But when kids and adults die in school trying to learn or teach, my clear stupidity of knowledge of guns is brought up,
not the fact they are still shot in school and there is nothing I can say to save them? No law could of stopped this clearly disturbed individual for acquiring a weapon that killed so many?
We can’t even have conversations about what could of stop the situation but let’s drag the conversation down, so far nothing gets done and this sadly will unfortunately happen again in another school or public place.
I just hope it’s no one I know or anyone on this site or who they know.
50KalSo here we are again one side saying the other side is stupid and can’t criticize the issue because of lack of knowledge about proper terminology.
The issue here is that you are preaching about things which you have not taken the time to understand. You're parroting what CNN and ABC are saying, blindly following the media hype. This type of sensationalist attitude is part of the reason nothing gets done.
I have taken the time to research, listen, and fully understand the anti-gun side of the argument. I get it, people are outraged, and rightly so. Something does need to be done.
Unfortunately, on my side (pro-gun), there are also many, many ignorant folks. I cringe when pro-gun folks use lines such as "hundreds of people are killed each day by cars and we aren't outlawing those." That's ridiculous. Car accidents are just that, accidents. Mass-shootings are not accidents. I get that it's easiest to point the finger at guns. However, we cannot simply get rid of guns. Nothing is that simple.
I do not profess to have the solution. I do know that our country, which I do love, is fucked up in so, so many ways. When there were a few shootings in courthouses, every courthouse in the country very promptly installed metal detectors and posted armed guards. It seems ridiculous that this is necessary in our schools, but it's looking like it is. The problem is so widespread, and so random. It transcends age (elementary to college), race, economic status, quality of the school, rural, urban...it's insane.
If we can move away from the "ban all guns" idea and work on a feasible solution, maybe something can be done. I support additional background checks and legislation along those lines. I do not support limiting how many or what type of guns I may own as a law-abiding, mentally-healthy individual with an impeccable background.
snowpocalypseHow about, I'm anti my kid getting shot at school. I have guns and understand that we as a nation need to do something to stop this round about of shootings, prayers then nothing. This^^^
Extremists on both ends are never right. Theres two sides to this argument and both have valid points. Banning guns and flooding the market with guns are both terrible ideas
Hey gun control people: you're right
Hey mental health people: you're right
I don't know why it always has to be one way or the other, everyone just screams their opinions and no one listens to each other. This is how nothing get accomplished. Calm your emotions, be reasonable, listen, and find a way to compromise. Yes people should pay attention to mental health, but should it really be that easy for ANYONE (especially mental health patients) to get their hands on a fucking AR?
JTTremblesThis is the LAMEST fucking thing I've ever seen.
In what way? I guarantee you most people who want to ban guns see an ar-15 and thing we need to ban assault weapons. When they see the traditional style mini 14 they think "oh thats just a hunting rifle that should be allowed". You would be amazed on how uneducated people are.
I think in the states the problem is the culture built around guns. They aren’t just tools but worshiped as items that grant immediate power and masculinity.
I grew up around guns my whole life, but was taught that they are just a tool like anything else. To be respected and understood, but never more. To me shooting an AR style rifle is fun, but I don’t see the point in owning one. Same with hand guns... a 45 acp 1911 is super fun to shoot, but I don’t see the point of owning one. It’s the same principal with automatics.
Maybe coming from from Canada I just don’t get it.
Nobody fucking cares what they’re called. They’re used to make killing many targets more efficient regardless of what their called
iFlipYour ignorance is showing.
They’re fucking assault rifles when they’re used to kill many victims in a quick and efficient manner. No need to ban AR15’s because they’re “not technically” assault riffles so they’re not dangerous, gimme a break. Some gun nuts sure are a bunch of butt hurt dumbasses
Just try banning high capacity magazines, just to say you fucking tried something besides prayers.
I say we ban all semi-automatic firearms. Yes you can still effectively kill a lot of people with a bolt action rifle but you are going to have to know what you are doing and it will take much longer. Yes you could go on a shooting with a shotgun, but i would much rather be running down a hallway from a shotgun than an AR.
The culture with guns in this country is so relaxed and i think thats where the problem starts. 40 years ago (im assuming) most people that owned guns used them to do some sort of hunting. Now every fucking teenager wants to own an AR or another semi automatic weapon for no reason but because they are badass and fun to shoot. Theres tons of people out there that have no respect for firearm safety.
And for those people that want semi-autos so they can stand up against the government if need be, good fucking luck, you arn't going to make it to far because if it comes to that the gov will have already drone striked your ass assuming its a government that needs standing up to.
And for the criminals will find a way to get them people, eventually the supply will run slim without everyother person in the US owning one that could be stolen and then used by criminals. Also for the person that wants to find one it becomes harder and every person they ask where to get one is another person that could potentially stop them or for law enforcement to catch wind.
As much as I back 2nd amendment rights, I own a gun and believe we should have that right, posting shit like this just makes you look extremely insensitive and selfish as fuck. I think people like yourself that have to prove over and over to other people that guns aren't a problem need to wake the fuck up and realize that we have a HUGE problem here.
That being said, I do not have a solution and I think if we had a solution, it would be in place. This shit isnt going to change until the pro-gun citizens of the USA decide its time for change, until then there will be more people killing other people in mass shootings. Focusing on mental health is key, but thats not going to change anything immediately, we need some serious change in our country's gun laws and it will never happen if people like yourself keep focusing on yourself.

This is a HUGE thing that pro-gun people try to exploit and its absolutely bullshit. We need to update the 2nd amendment to reflect current society, thats the real problem here. You could have 100 automatic rifles in your house, it's not stopping the US government.

You and I have butted heads over guns in the past, most recently in the aftermath of the Vegas shooting. Saying that I'm only concerned with myself isn't going to help move along the dialogue.
I am in 100% agreement that these mass shootings have to stop. They are unacceptable, national tragedies, and a real black-eye to America on the global stage. Realistically we are not going to ban guns. I think we both understand that. We may ban certain guns, or certain gun features, but we will not ban guns.
The FBI admits that they dropped the ball on the Florida shooter. However, they must receive thousands of tips/complaints each week. How they decide which ones to follow up, and take seriously, must obviously leave cracks through which some individuals fall. As I have said, I do not purport to have a solution. At this point I would support metal detectors, airport-type scanners, and armed guards at every public school in the US, all the way from Elementary through University. There would be some other positive side-effects of this, such as cutting down on drugs in schools, etc.
I am also in favor of stricter background checks and increased criteria for gun ownership. Anyone with any history whatsoever of domestic abuse should be barred from gun ownership. Those with mental health issues should be carefully screened and in the majority of cases should be barred from gun ownership. I'm certain there are many other individuals I would also agree should not be permitted to own a firearm. However, if you are a good American with a clean record, your Second Amendment rights should not be infringed upon.
It's a mental health problem, and our society is sick as fuck, rotten to it's core so you know damn well we're not going to do anything to help people with mental problems. In a properly functioning society you wouldnt have people murdering children in schools on a quarterly basis.
If people are too disturbed to live in a free society then we aren't going to have a free society. Nice run democracy, but ultimately we didn't deserve you.

The US is consistently the only free country to deal with these issues as often as they arise. I would gladly give up my freedoms to buy weapons in favor of retaining other freedoms but thats not how this country does things. The 1st amendment is consistently being threatened but the 2nd is the only one people seem to care about.

The thing is, when you are proposing a ban on something, you need to actually articulate what you are trying to ban. Saying a gun is an assault rife when it is used to kill many victims is silly as the gun would then only be banned after it had been used to kill people not before; what good is that?
Imagine someone saying we should ban all attack dogs. The only possible reply to that person is that attack dog isnt a classification of dog, they need to be more specfic.

"In an analysis of 235 mass killings, many of which were carried out with firearms, 22 percent of the perpetrators could be considered mentally ill."
"Overall, mass shootings by people with serious mental illness represent 1 percent of all gun homicides each year, according to the book “Gun Violence and Mental Illness” published by the American Psychiatric Association in 2016."

it isnt just a mental health problem, the issue is deeper than that
I just don't think it's possible to shoot yourself in a suicide or murder 20 people at random in a school without being mentally ill. We might be talking about the same thing in that regard, call it what you will.
JTTremblesI think iflip is one of those uneducated people. He's ignorant as fuck not his accusers
Excellent, thoughtful insight. There is actually a very good chance that I am the most-educated NSer. Regardless, education has little to do with this debate. Education on the issue is relevant, but overall education matters little in this context.
Anyway, liberal or conservative, who cares. Sure more Republicans own guns but plenty of democrats do as well. Myself included. We need to get over this liberal conservative debate and act like the unified fucking country that we are supposed to be. American being America, I highly doubt guns will ever be banned, no matter how much anti-gun lobbying occurs. Yes it drives me insane when they talk about "assault rifles" as some big bad thing... Wtf is an assault rifle anyway lol. It's all about the person wielding the weapon. Any weapon can be very deadly if utilized properly...any weapon. And FYI, ar-15's with standard 30rd mags, which are most commonly used aren't the most deadly legal weapon available. Thank God these nut cases are dumb and know nothing of guns and only get their ideas from the media.
The big problem is mental health. You can't deny it. Once we work on that, we should see less of these types of shootings. And we need to stop publicizing this shit for weeks on end on TV and papers; it only gives more ideas to the crazies. Semi-auto weapons have existed for a long time, but only recently (past 20 years or so) have these mass shootings increased in incidence. Think it has nothing to do with publicity? Think again.
Also fun fact, your kids are 11 times more likely to drown than die in a shooting at school. #banswimmingpools
Or perhaps we should put cellphone jammers in cars because distracted driving is out of control? Or maybe they should ban fast food and soda because heart disease is the #1 cause of death in America? Or why not allow cars to only start if a seat belt is clicked in? Why not put breathalyzer starters in all cars in the US? Let's ban knives and fireworks while we're at it too.
Real question, why not let teachers have guns? Criminals don't give a flying fuck that a school is a gun free zone.
IsitWinterYet17Lol reading this thread crashed my phone.

Just some food for thought.
All of the things you mentioned (driving, knives, etc.) come with risk, however small it may be, and people know that and go in to those things with open eyes. People know the risks of whatever they may be doing, and accept them. No-one should have to worry about their kid getting killed at school. School should be a very safe environment. As well as this, mental health is a very subjective thing. If it was possible to predict what people were going to do based on their mental state, mass shootings probably wouldn't be a problem. Ex. Stephen paddock was by most standards a pretty normal guy on the surface. also, I don't know the answer to this problem, but adding guns to the situation is not it.
In the 30's mass shootings unrelated to organized crime or against innocent bystanders was almost unheard of. At the same time you could buy a fully automatic Thompson machine gun in the hardware store, with a 20-30 round magazine... Guns haven't gotten deadlier.
I'm not some pro gun nut that thinks everyone should be openly carrying their ar-15 while they drive their kids to soccer practice and buy groceries. And I'm not some bleeding heart pussy who thinks that guns are the worst thing ever created and that they should be banned outright. I live in CT an I'm pretty much behind our relatively strict gun control. To buy rifles and other long guns I had to go though a firearms safety course (hunters saftey) and then apply for a permit though the state that included an fbi background check. After I applied I had to wait 3 months for the licence to arrive. I must present that licence every time I purchase a long gun or ammunition. And even with that licence those under the age of 21 are barred from purchasing semi automatic centerfire weapons. To buy a pistol you must be 21 and undergo similar procedures to obtain your pistol permit, allowing you to purchase and carry hand guns and buy pistol ammunition... while all of this is a pain in the ass and i have to drive all the way across the damn state to file paperwork and pay fees, i dont think it's really an unreasonable amount of oversight... but once I pass the checks, wait the allotted amount of time, and make 3 different 1.5 hour drives, i want to be able to buy whatever the hell my heart desires. None of this bullshit about how a flash hiders, fore grips, and adjustable stocks make firearms a danger to society. That's just a compilation of buzz words meant to placate the public in the wake of tragedy and really only makes it illegal to possess certain hunks of metal and plastic.
Remember when we used to blame shootings on violent video games/media?
I actually think we were on to something there. I’m not into video games, I’d rather go skiing:) but my little brother has been playing Call of Duty, Halo, other shooting games, etc etc. for his whole life almost. I’m not saying he would shoot people, he’s mentally healthy, but I think that we have become desensitized from these violent games/media and all the real life shootings in general. Especially these younger kids.
Getting rid of all guns isn’t the solution, but something needs to change.
Mental health needs to be taken seriously. It should be harder to get a gun. I could get a gun tomorrow super easily. Someone fucked up in the head could also get a gun pretty easily tomorrow as well.
To buy a gun:
Buyer must receive background check
Buyer must receive physical from physician/psychotherapist.
Buyer must take gun safety/hunters education course and pass.
Buyer must receive a referral or two from family/friends, affirming that potential Buyer is healthy.
Id be down for other precautions as well before being able to buy.

Well AR15's with high capacity "magazines" have been used in almost every mass shooting in recent history. AR15's on their own are fine. what needs to be changed is banning any magazine with a capacity of more than five rounds regardless of the rifle it's going into. It's commonplace around the rest of the developed world, why can't the US figure this out? is it that hard to see?
I love shooting guns, I've shot all sorts of semi automatic rifles with high capacity magazines. I love putting hundreds of rounds through my SKS (easiest to get in Canada) with 30 round magazines. Thing is they're highly illegal up here so they never leave my property. Any semi automatic rifle with a high capacity magazine is hard to get so they're not exactly common place.
Mental health is obviously the issue, there's no denying that, it's just more probable to regulate high capacity magazines than to regulate lunatics.
It would be great if everyone could responsibly own a semi automatic rifles with high capacity magazines, but the reality is that you have to play to the slowest member of society.
So many problems with those three words. The only reason a gun should be feared is if there is someone using it illegally, and the rare accident. People who are going to be breaking the law wont give a fuck if its a gun free zone or not, the only difference is the ones following the law wont be able to protect themselves.
I dont see how this ever became a thing its actually mental

Fun Fact, my kid takes swimming lessons for that exact reason. You don't ban the tool but you make sure the people using it have the knowledge and training to use it correctly.
Fast Food? You getting diabetes will not put a bullet in my kids head at school. Sure my Health insurance might go up but at least my kid is still alive. With cars all operators have taken both a written and field test before getting a license. They have been trained and have requirements to operate said car or truck. There are health requirement and you must renew and pass evaluations every few years. If you are breaking the rules, you are held accountable and can lose that privilege.
All but one of my guns have been owner to owner transfer. NO paperwork NO background check.... Nothing. The state has no idea if I can shoot, if I'm a felon or killed bunnies for fun when I was a kid....... I have not by the way. Look, I own guns. I target shoot, I hunt and I have them for household protection. I would gladly go through more stringent training or background check for all gun sales.
Back to original thought. You don't toss kids into the deep end of a pool without training and expect good results so why are we doing the same with weapons that are designed to inflict death. Training, education and limits are not always bad thing.

Any statistics on what percentage of mass shooters are male? It seems to be the overwhelming majority.
Men are 1.5x less likely to go to college than women, 2.5x more likely to be homeless, and 3.5x more likely to commit suicide. Nonetheless, they're increasingly blamed for the world's problems. They're called creeps for trying to talk to women, they're blamed for a gender wage gap which they've done nothing to cause, they're accused of misogyny for looking at pictures of girls in swimsuits, and they're kicked out of school at the first allegation of sexual misconduct. In a world that is hostile to men, is it any surprise that men are hostile back?

your obviously sick in the head to have the capacity to kill, generally in most states mentally ill means you cant or are barely able to actually take care of yourself.
roddy116your obviously sick in the head to have the capacity to kill, generally in most states mentally ill means you cant or are barely able to actually take care of yourself.
Yeah that was the point I was trying to make earlier. I’m pretty sure every graduating class had one kid they all thought might snap and kill everyone on any given day but that’s a different kind of problem from talking to plants and hearing voices etc.

Ban the sale of new semi-automatic firearms or ban them altogether and make it illegal to own one?
What percentage of gun deaths are from ARs? What percentage of accident related deaths? Yes, I understand a mass shooting is one of the most horrific things that happens in America, but are we using utilitarian philosophy? If so, your time is better spent elsewhere. Banning a certain firearm or certain size magazine might stop a few mass shootings, yeah. But at what cost? Stop and frisk in Chicago would likely save way, way more lives.

I mean what! Read what you have just written, then go back and read it again until you get some sense of morality. If you think people's right to a certain gun trumps children's and innocent people's safety you may need to rethink your mindset.
Sandyhook, Pulse, Las Vegas, Columbine, Parkland were all carried out using AR-15s
Mental Health and AR-15s. There's a link here. Spend money on mental healthcare and ban AR-15s
