I went up to keystone today with a friend who was using a borrowed season pass from my dad. Unknown to my friend and I, Vail Resorts has a
"non-transferable" policy, you should know this from the size 2 font indicating this on your pass. The liftie did not like that my 16 y/o friend was not 45 so he said he was going to revoke the pass. I tried to plead with the liftie, we had no idea that it was an issue, I told him my dad "didn't" know I had taken his pass for the day. He didn't care, so he proceeded to make us fill out paperwork, tell me I'm lucky police don't get involved for identity theft, and then had the audacity to tell me I could pay ONLY $2,500 to get the pass renewed. It is halfway through the season and this is the price of a full package season pass smh. After skiing I find out that these lifties get paid a reward for catching these criminals. Im a teenager who made an honest mistake and is happy to pay for a day pass if a have to. Thinking back to this experience I feel manipulated and exploited out of thousands of dollars.

Yeah it sucks but they’re legally fully correct. Kid I know at Pats Peak did the “forgot your season pass, printed a free day pass” and then gave the day pass to his friend. Somehow they got caught and the kid ended up getting his season pass pulled, payed a $55 day ticket fine, and then ended up with fraud and identity theft on his record. Then Pats fucking banned him from the mountain. They got pretty butthurt over one little ticket.

Also, along the lines of poaching, I picked up a few adult tickets and a few free kids passes in K-horse, not enough for the entire vacay, but enough for a few days. I accidentally grabbed one of the kids passes and rode with it all day. realized once I was done for the day that I rode for free.

If lifties don't have any motivation to bust people (ie a bonus for finding people without a pass or using someone elses passes) then the employees just wouldn't do anything about it, they'd stop scanning passes, etc. This is how it works at every major ski resort, smaller mountains probably dgaf. I worked as a liftie at Moonlight (now Big Sky owned/operated) and we even had a $50 bonus or something if we caught people with someone else's pass, that was in 2006 and it definitely existed before then as well.
Easy solution is don't go skiing if you don't have a pass, I know as a young person that seems outrageous, but when you get older and look back on this OP you're going to realize "Wow I was a dumb fucking kid".

The only passes I know of which are transferable limited numbers of days. If a pass gives you 50 days at a resort it is less of a big deal for it to be transferable. By using someone else's pass you are stealing, plain and simple. I really don't know how the OP can possibly think doing this is not a big deal. Resorts make a very big deal about this, because if they didn't they would lose lots of money to this type of fraud. I'm truly amazed that the OP thinks the resort would not take this seriously. Your dad is lucky they will even sell him another pass.
If the OP thinks this is not a big deal, then perhaps this will be a good life lesson. NEVER give a fake ID to a cop, you can show one to a bouncer at the door of a bar, but showing a cop a fake ID could get you in lots of trouble. Businesses take this stuff very seriously, and what you did was basically steal from Vail resorts. I will also echo the sentiment that years from now you will realize how stupid it was to do this.
Normal season passes are NEVER transferable. Like I said, there are exceptions but they cost lots of money. We live in a day and age where season passes are relatively cheap for the most part, especially given how pricey day tickets are. I don't see how anyone could possibly think that a season pass was transferable. If they were the resorts would be out a ton of money, as people would just share them.

Because they probably scan your pass. IF they don't scan then I could understand being surprised. Still probably not that many forgot passes each day, could give a list to the lifties to be on the lookout for.
If they scan, are you serious? When you print a forgotten pass ticket, it flags or shuts down your pass. If you try and use it, the system most def has that info of you saying you forgot it and getting a forgotten pass.

Oh god no! I would hate to upset a person for stealing. Stores should never call the police if a kid steals anything because he might get pissed off and say fuck(insert store name) That would be terrible!

The policy is the policy and sometimes it's at the discretion of the place/people working. If you're not an asshole that goes a lot better, but it's no guarantee as you're still doing something wrong. Being nice doesn't simply make it ok.
They could make the penalty $20 and a stern talking to, maybe even yelling and shaking fist, but then everybody would do it and just pay the fine if they got caught.
An epic pass is not $500 even at the cheapest point. So even though $500 is a lot, that's not even charging them the price of that.
A lot of places run a policy of pulling the pass, and forcing the other person to buy the most full priced lift ticket. IF other person wants a pass they have to buy another at the current rate. This sounds like a similar policy.
As far as taking it too seriously, if you don't do anything about theft, people will steal. The honor system doesn't go that far.

Each state is different, but punishment for theft depends on the value of the item stolen or in this case fraudulent use. Word yeah for sure. Way easier to get away with at a smaller mtn but still possible to get caught. Would need to be a little more sly the him. That said small mtns are rad, and many are barely staying in the black. I'm down to support the small places and buy a lift ticket.

I don't know if 2,500 is going easy, but I really don't think it is that bad. No one is having their life ruined. The kid made a mistake, this will probably mean he does not make the same mistake again. It is completely understandable for a resort to try to prevent people from doing this. It would be understandable if they banned the guy for a couple of years, they are not doing that. He is getting out of this without even a criminal record, so I think he is not really getting screwed that badly. 2,500 is not all that much money in the scheme of things.

My mountain started cracking down on this. They pulled out a stat that is something line 25-30% of potential ticket sales is lost because of people not buying tickets or using other peoples. Not sure how accurate that is but even if it 5% thats a pretty good chunk of change.
Bottom line if you go skiing somewhere, buy a pass its not worth getting caught especially with resorts implementing more technology to stop this.

The pass is good for 1 persons, so what difference does it make if it's you using it that day or someone else. Still just 1 person being allowed on the hill. Festival passes and transit passes are starting to be transferrable. Don't see why ski hills can't do the same. Sure people leaving early sell wristbands all the time, but Ive never heard of a festival saying they were cool with that.
Even if they lost 10% of pass revenue for a season because of it, it's ONLY 10% but it's still a good amount of money the ski area is banking on.
A ton of ski areas aren't that well off turning crazy profits. Some are barely breaking even.
VinnieFPasses should be transferrable. Would make sense, and a lot of other businesses are going that route. The pass is good for 1 persons, so what difference does it make if it's you using it that day or someone else. Still just 1 person being allowed on the hill. Festival passes and transit passes are starting to be transferrable. Don't see why ski hills can't do the same. The loss is pass sales from people sharing clearly isn't an issue if other businesses are doing it, and makes sense that the only sales lost would be the occasional single day ticket if that even.
Ski resorts absolutely cannot operate this way. They would lose tons of money on day tickets and season passes.
Back when I worked at a ski shop we had a shop pass for both Squaw and Alpine, they were separate back then. Anyone in the shop could use the pass, but it could only be used by one person. Everyone in the shop owned a pass anyway, we had a discount, but if you had a Squaw pass and wanted to ski Alpine you could take the shop pass. I don't know what the shop pass cost, but I'm quite sure it would not be the same as an individual pass.
If someone uses a pass that is not theirs that costs the resort a day ticket. If this was done regularly it would cost the resort quite a bit of money. There might be some businesses that can operate in the manner you suggest, but a ski resort is not one of them. Put it this way, two friends live in the bay area and ski Squaw on weekends. They could alternate who goes up each weekend, and only pay for one pass for the two of them. Most Tahoe weekenders are going up 2-3 weekends a month anyway, so they don't go every weekend. If lots of people do this it could significantly impact the revenue Squaw receives, they really can't have that.

Most people dont ski all day every day. A ton of people would split passes to split the costs.

To start, Bluesfest in Ottawa has started doing transferable passes recently. Jazz fest has done it for a while.
I disagree that they would loose a ton of money. You're thinking everyone is a ski bum, which hardly anyone is.
Look at it this way: What is one of the largest groups if not the largest group of skiers? It's those who ski a handful of times a year. Certainly not enough to warrant buying a pass. Usually the type of people with little to no hill fidelity and might go a couple times to one hill and a couple times to another. That is your target with transferable passes. Suddenly you have a pass option that they can think is worth their while if they can split it with their wife/friend/coworker. Now that person has paid up front more money to your business than they would pay over a few visits (lifts turn regardless of whether they show) AND makes them more tied down to your business instead of the competition. They're now more likely to ski at your hill solely buying food etc.
Then let's not forget the marketing aspect of it. If there are 4 hills around your city, all of them have equal prices season's passes, but one allows you to transfer if to another person, which one are you likely to buy?
Obviously location is huge for this. But in an area like Ottawa where there are several hill all close to a large population all vying for the weekend warrior money this would be killer. No, it wouldn't work in small ski towns with 1 mountain.
And as a side note, although it's not official, Camp Fortune (ski hill near Ottawa) essentially has transferable passes now. Yes, it's against their terms, but the pass has no picture, stays inside your jacket and the gates open automatically with no picture showing up. It's quite fool proof for using someone else's pass. If their pass sales drop by any significant margin next year that can only be attributed to pass sharing then I would eat my hat.
