I have a buddy who goes and heli skis in Alaska every year and he always records and sends me videos. It’s pretty amazing what comes out of that region.

Ohh yea, would love to do that someday. Walking up is way harder, flying to the top is the way to go.

fuck yeah! looks like such an epic trip. Did my first yurt trip in the tetons this year and it was honestly incredible. I'd never done any winter overnights and hanging in a cozy yurt partying all night and skiing bluebird pow all day made for the best 5 days of my life! Stoked to have another yurt in the tetons and a hut in the kootenays lined up for this winter.

What service/pilots did you use to fly up there? How much did they charge to get you up there?
What type of heavy duty winter tent is it that you guys were using? Were you worried about the tents getting trashed with all that snow?
How much snow did you get on your 18 days up there?

Were you familiar with the area before launching this trip?

Ive been looking into what my buddy does and he’s gone a few times. He said he used Silverton Heli Guides one time and Points North Heli (he was there when Bryce Phillips was filming Here, There, and Everywhere). The one downside, he said, was that for the heli, if the wind or weather is too harsh they can’t fly. On his last trip they only flew three times in a week but he said when he got fly time the snow was unreal.

Great questions.
Price of course depends on how far you fly, it ended up being about $700 (I think) per person for all flights to and from the glacier for us (2 planes in 2 planes out.)
Then food for 3 weeks, beer, snacks, sat phone and whatever else we needed (like gold bond for our feet) was $475 per person. We ate quite well.
Then flights to Alaska for the three of us that didn't live there.
And gear. Between all of us we had the majority of the gear, different people had different things. I purchased a few more clothes for those temperatures, but not to much and a lot of it I was looking to get anyway.

Emergency logistics, we were mentally prepared to figure it out if something happens.
Rescue would depend on weather, with perfect conditions it could potentially still be hours. We had a satellite phone, so even if the conditions were not good enough for a plane to land, a bird could potentially come grab us as well.

We did make a few calls to a designated person that could give us weather data....it was not always accurate though. The weather patterns out there are crazy.

Avalanche conditions: There is no one out there making reports for us, this was our responsibility. We did all the basic digging pits etc. and then had a snow study area were we tracked and logged the snow. One guy in our group had a bit more experience on that which was great.

We flew with Regal Air outside of Anchorage. Costs roughly $700 per person for both planes in and out.

That was a mountain hardware dome tent, this served as our kitchen, living room etc. We had 3 four season tents where we slept. We did not get super crazy winds which was nice, but you dig the tents in/ make walls to protect them. You also have to dig out the tents and get the weight off teh top after a storm. We never had to wakeup in the middle of the night to do that, but sometimes people do.

How much snow did you get on your 18 days up there?
-I can double check with a friend if you want a more exact number, but we got somewhere in the 4-8 foot range at camp. Some of the days were warm so it compressed, however our tents to sleep in were below the surface level of the glacier as seen in that picture at the end.

I was not, we had some good beta though. Our initial plan was to go to Haines, however it was too warm up there.

We all had dynafits, then we had verts, which are these wierd plastic snowshoes...they work really well for climbing up steep slopes.
